Gleason brothers power TA Firth to first; ORC looms

TA Firth will enter 2016 as the top rec league hockey team in Whitehorse, thanks in large part to the Gleason brothers.

TA Firth will enter 2016 as the top rec league hockey team in Whitehorse, thanks in large part to the Gleason brothers.

Strong first halves by Chris Gleason and Ryan Gleason have powered the club to the top of the A Division standings, four points up on ORC and five up on perennial leader Air North.

Chris Gleason has piled up a team-leading 24 goals and 28 assists for 52 points in 18 games, while his older brother has buried 26 goals and 23 assists for 49 points in 14 games.

TA Firth is 14-3-3, backstopped by starting goalie Matt King, who is 8-1-1 with a 4.10 GAA.

Both Gleasons are members of the Nuway Crushing Ltd. Whitehorse Huskies, while King is the senior hockey club’s general manager.

Gold Pan-Cinderwood sniper Mike Arnold leads the league with 46 goals and 43 assists for 89 points in 21 games.

While the league is currently off the ice for the holidays, action resumes Jan. 2, with TA Firth facing second-place ORC at Takhini Arena.

In B Division play, the CRB Nighthawks will enter the new year atop the league with a record of 18-2-2, seven points up on runner-up Goodys Gas.

Nighthawks star Tyrell Hope has fuelled the team’s success with 21 goals and 28 assists for 49 points in 22 games, while goalie Breyin Weins has been lights out between the pipes, sporting a league-best 2.45 GAA.

Meanwhile, Boston Pizza-Polarcom forward Tyler Murray has returned to his familiar place atop the league scoring race, with 29 goals and 23 assists for 52 points in 21 games.
