Glacier Bears win 16 medals in Kelowna

The Whitehorse Glacier Bears (WGB) headed home with quite a medal haul after competing in the AA long course (50-metre) swim meet in Kelowna, B.C., yesterday.

The Whitehorse Glacier Bears (WGB) headed home with quite a medal haul after competing in the AA long course (50-metre) swim meet in Kelowna, B.C., yesterday.

The Glacier Bears combined for 16 medals and numerous best times.

Seven Yukon swimmers and head coach Marek Poplawski traveled south for the meet.

For the girls it was Cassis Lindsay, 10, Taylor Harvey, 11, and Dannica Nelson, 12.

For the boys it was Adrian Robinson, 11, Craig Berube, 14, Sam Storey, 14, and Gavin Young.

Robinson had a stellar meet by winning the gold in the 11-year-old boys in the 100-m free and 100-m backstroke, which were both AAA times for that age category.

He also nabbed silver in the 200 free and bronze in the 100 breaststroke, as well as fifth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of three minutes and 36.22 seconds, which is also now a new WGB club record.

In the boys 14-year-old category, Berube won gold in the 100 backstroke and silvers in the 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke and 100 fly. He also placed fourth in the 200 free, fifth in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 50 free.

Lindsay won three bronze medals, one in the girls 11-and-under 50 free, one in the 10-and-under 50 fly and one in the 10-and-under 200 IM.

During preliminaries, Lindsay achieved an 11-year-old girls AAA time in the 50 free. Her other results in the 10-and-under category were fourth in the 400 free, fifth in the 100 back, 15th in the 200 breast and 16th in the 100 breast.

Harvey won silver in the 11-and-under girls 200 free, as well as fourth in the 400 free, sixth in the 200 IM, sixth in the 100 free, 12th in the 50 free and 13th in the 100 back.

Storey placed fourth in the boys 14-year-old 100 free, fifth in the 200 free, fifth in the 400 free, sixth in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 back.

Young, also in the boys 14-year-old category, finished fourth in the 50 free, sixth in the 200 back, seventh in the 200 free, seventh in the 400 free, ninth in the 100 free and ninth in the 100 back.

The boys 14-and-under relay team won gold in the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay.
