Glacier Bears finish ninth out of 20 teams

The Whitehorse Glacier Bears brought home three trophies from the Hyack Festival Invitational Long Course Swim Meet in Vancouver last weekend.

The Whitehorse Glacier Bears brought home three trophies from the Hyack Festival Invitational Long Course Swim Meet in Vancouver last weekend.

Alexandra Gabor captured the high-point sprint as well as the distance freestyle trophies, while Bronwyn Pasloski scored the most points overall in the female 13-14 age group. Pasloski set a meet record in the 50-metre breast while Gabor did the same in the 100-m free.

The fourteen Whitehorse swimmers combined efforts to finish ninth of 20 teams. Other participants included teams from throughout B.C., Calgary, Washington, and Oregon.

In the process, 15 Glacier Bear club records were set, bringing the total number of club records for the 2005/06 season to 125.

Pasloski came first in the 50-m breast, second in the 50-m free, 100- and 200-m breast, and 200-m IM, fourth in the 400-m free, sixth in the 50-, 100- and 200-m back, and eighth in the 50-m fly. Gabor finished first in the 50-, 100-, 200-, 400- and 800-m free, second in the 1,500-m free, third in the 100-m fly and fifth in the 50-m fly.

Kirsten Berube, competing in her first long course meet, made three AAA times in the female 11-12 age group. She finished eighth in the 50-m free and made the B finals in two other events, setting six personal best times.

Kimberly Holmes swam in B finals in three events and Haley Bielz achieved a personal best time in the 50-m back.

Gabor will compete in Baltimore, Maryland early in June, in an elite age group and senior meet. At the end of June, a number of Yukon swimmers will travel to Vancouver for the Lower Mainland Regional AA Championships.
