The Whitehorse Glacier Bears swim club competed at the Winter Games swim meet this past weekend in Haines, Alaska.

The meet was a fun and encouraging way for our young swimmers to get valuable competition experience. Against strong competition from Juneau and Haines, here are a few of the results of our young swimmers.

Luke Bakica swam in the boys 10 and under category and won second in the 200-metre individual medley (IM) and the 50-m fly. He also earned two third place ribbons in the 200-m free and the 100-m IM.

His sister Jessica Bakica placed second in the girls 12 and under 200-m breast and third in the 200-m IM.

Also in the girls 12 and under events were Camille Saunders who had an excellent meet, placing first in the 50-m back, second in the 50-m fly and 50-m free and third in six other events.

Sydney Mackinnon racing in the girls 12 and also did well coming in fourth in the 50-m free and fifth in the 200-m IM.

Christopher Ritchie placed third in the boys 12 and under 500-m free, 50-m breast and 100-m IM.

For the club's 13/14 age grouping, Isabel Parkkari had another successful meet, with first place ribbons in the 500-m free and the 1,650-m free, second place in the 200-m IM, 400-m IM, 200-m free, 200-m breast, and the 100-m fly.

Nicole Wawryk and Tynan Leong-Best also competed in the 13/14 age group races with Nicole placing fourth in the 200-m free, 200-m breast and 100-m fly races, and Tynan winning two second place ribbons in the 500-m free and 200-m free races.

The Glacier Bears Girls 200-m yard freestyle relay placed third.

And finally, many Glacier Bears will be competing in the AA's in Penticton, B.C. from Feb. 5-7. Look for meet results soon.
