After the Creston Valley Thunder Cats upset of the Fernie Ghostriders – who have beaten the Cats all nine times they have faced this season – on Tuesday night, the Riders were out for revenge.
And they got it, to the tune of a 5-2 win over the Cats.
While the Thunder Cats never stopped fighting right up to the final seconds of the third period, it wasn't enough to overcome the KIJHL's Eddie Mountain Division leaders.
The first half of the first period saw no goals but plenty of shots on Creston goalie Sunny Gill.
The Ghostriders opened the scoring at 8:18 of the first period with a goal from captain Tim Crawley, unassisted on a power play. Creston's Jordan Johnson was sitting out for 10 minutes for a game misconduct, and Sean Maktaak was out for two minutes for tripping. Also in the penalty box was Ryan Hewitt, serving a two minute penalty for Brock Ward for goalie interference.
Gill faced 11 shots in the first period, while Fernie's Jason Greenwell saw nine.
The second period started off exciting, with the crowd on their feet as a penalty shot was called for Creston's Blake Kirkham at 17:21.
The energy in the arena was tense as the crowd watched Kirkham head for the goal. The puck bounced in to the right side of the net, and Greenwell surrendered his first of two goals of the night, sending hockey fans to their feet.
Not to be outdone, Fernie answered with a goal just a minute and 25 seconds later at 16:36. Mitchell Board scored, assisted by Darrell Boldon.
At 12:33 Fernie got their third goal of the night from Zach Traverse, assisted by Jesse Niemi and Brendan Hawryluk.
Traverse pitched the puck over Gill's shoulder into the top corner as the goalie was kneeling.
At 7:33, the Ghostriders' James Werner scored, assisted by Board and Traverse.
Creston called a time out to regroup after the goal. The pep talk gave the Creston players renewed energy, as Brody Moen scored at 2:13, assisted by Scott Swiston, for the Cats' second and final goal of the night.
The second period ended with both Gill and Greenwell facing nine shots.
The third period saw the Cats fighting to make up the difference in scoring, now at 4-2.
Whitehorse's Lawrence Brennan had the crowd cheering at 13:56 when he broke out in a fight with Boldon. Both players were removed from the game for a five minute misconduct for fighting, and a 10 minute game misconduct.
In the final minutes of the period, Gill was pulled, much like last night's decision by Fernie.
The Ghostriders took the open net and ran with it, when Bond Hawryluk got ahead of Cats'. Facing a lone defencemen and en empty net, the left winger scored, assisted by Niemi and brother Brendan Hawryluk with 33 seconds left.
The Thunder Cats sent Gill back in, and the offence powered hard right until the final seconds but were unable to catch up to Fernie.
The Cats outshot the Ghostriders 30 to 27, including 12 in the final period for Greenwell and seven for Gill.
The Hawryluk brothers' mother is from Carcross. The two had a big night with a goal for Bond Hawryluk and two assists for Brendan Hawryluk, on their first night playing on home ice.
Both teams headed home early this morning for some much needed rest. Fernie was finishing up a six day roadtrip in Whitehorse.
Both teams will get a days rest before playing Friday night. The Ghostriders play the Grand Forks Border Bruins at home, and the Thunder Cats play the Kimberley Dynamiters. Both games start at 6:30 p.m. PST. KIJHL games are streamed live at www.kijhl.ca
