Gabor, Pasloski bring home the hardware
Eleven members of the Whitehorse Glacier Bears Swim Club recently returned from the B.C. AAA championships in Victoria.
Eleven members of the Whitehorse Glacier Bears Swim Club recently returned from the B.C. AAA championships in Victoria.
Sixteen more club records were broken at the meet, bringing the total to 99 this season which is just one shy of the unspoken goal of 100 records.
Six of those records were broken by Alexandra Gabor, four by Bronwyn Pasloski, three by Allan Lebedoff, two by Brendan Zrum and one by Geoffrey Thompson.
Gabor and Pasloski brought back seven medals between them two golds for Pasloski, and two silvers and three bronze for Gabor.
'They were excellent,' said Bears coach Marek Poplawski about all of the athletes. 'They had good swims and good placings, excellent times.
'Alex and Bronwyn both made the B.C. age group team (12-and-under) and will be attending a meet with the team in April.'
Pasloski's older sister Lynsey competed in the female 17-and-under category, where she finished fourth in the 50-metre freestyle, just 8/100ths of a second from grabbing a bronze medal.
On the boys side, Lebedoff qualified for the Canada Games this summer.
'Some of them (the boys) have been sick,' said the coach. 'They didn't make any finals, but all of them came back with some best times.
'I was very pleased with everybody. Everybody worked hard and they all had good team spirit too, which is nice to see.'
Next up for the some of the Bears is the Western Canadian championships, which will be held Feb. 17-20.
Lynsey and Bronwyn Pasloski, Gabor and Marcos Da Silva will travel to Victoria for the championships.
Da Silva didn't travel to the AAA event because he's too old the event is for those under 18.
Because of the short time in between meets, Poplawski said the athletes won't be training too hard this week, focusing instead on resting and polishing their skills. He added the Westerns will mostly be about experience for the younger athletes.
'For Alex and Bronwyn, it's just basically the experience and exposing them to a higher level of swimming. I expect them to do the same, where time is concerned, as at the AAA meet.
'Lynsey is on the track back from being sick. She's been to Westerns before, so for her, it's about getting back into shape and getting motivated to compete again now that her health is better.
'With Marcos, to make top 10 in some swims would be very good for him. And he should improve some of his times because he didn't swim at AAA, which means his last event was in December, so he's had a lot of time to train. I expect him to shave some time off.'
