To say that Yukon swimmer Alexandra Gabor did well at club nationals this past weekend would be a major understatement.

The 12-year-old athlete continued to prove her dominance in each of the freestyle events, picking up three gold medals and another two silver in the 12-and-under category at the event, held in Winnipeg.

Gabor was first in the 50-metre free, 100-m free and 200-m free, while finishing second in both the 400-m free and 800-m free. She also grabbed an impressive fourth-place finish in the 100-m butterfly, swimming outside of her specialty.

Besides bringing home five medals, Gabor also broke two B.C. records, in the 100-m and 200-m free. Those two performances were also meet records, which means no one in her age group has ever posted that good of a time at club nationals.

'I'm very happy,' said Marek Poplawski, head coach of the Whitehorse Glacier Bears, in an interview Monday. 'I was expecting there would be better competition, but it was good.

'In some events, Alex is the best in Canada.'

Poplawski said he's done some research in the past few months on the U.S. swimmers in Gabor's age group, and he's fairly certain she would be tops in the U.S. in some events as well.

'Her times, especially in the 200 (fly), would have put her in the finals even in the senior girls (category) I think.'

In the 200-m fly, Gabor was about three seconds ahead of her closest competitor, which is a boat load of time in a swimming competiton. In the 50- and 100-m events, it was a bit closer, but it still seems obvious that Gabor is ready for some stronger competition.

She has one more year in the 12-and-under category, but she will face swimmers up to 18 years of age at the Canada Summer Games in a couple of weeks.

'It will be tough for her (at Canada Games), since she was at AAA's (earlier this month), then club nationals and now she's in California for a meet,' said Poplawski. 'So I don't expect too much. Some swims she should be close to her personal bests, though.'

Meanwhile, Galcier Bear Bronwyn Pasloski also attended the club nationals in Winnipeg. After being part of a phenomenal one-two punch with Gabor last season and part of the current one, Pasloski was moved up a category a few months ago, when she turned 13.

Competing in the tough 13-14 group, she still managed to make a final, finishing eighth in the 50-m breast stroke. Pasloski also posted a personal best in the 50-m free.

As a team, Pasloski and Gabor placed 32nd overall out of 124 clubs. They were 20th in the girls division.
