Jessica Frotten – born and raised in Whitehorse – won bronze Thursday in the 100-metre wheelchair sprint at the 2015 Parapan Am Games in Toronto.
The field of eight sprinters was dominated by Jessica Lewis of Bermuda and her Parapan Am record of 17 seconds and 67 one-hundredths. Silver went to Frotten’s Canadian teammate, Ilana Dupont, in a time of 18:63.
For third, it was neck-and-neck, from the moment the gun went off to the time Frotten powered herself to bronze in a time of 19:25, just 13 one hundredths of a second ahead of fourth-place Jill Moore of the United States.
In fact, it was a photo finish between third, fourth, fifth and sixth place.
“I am super happy with the race I had,” Frotten said in post-race TV interview with CBC. “I fought for the third spot with Jill Moore but I am really happy with how it came together.”
Frotten was scheduled to race in the 400-metre final this afternoon, after winning a berth in her semifinal heat Wednesday.
In the 800-metre final yesterday, Frotten finished in fourth just under a second behind her teammate Dupont and one one-hundredth of a second ahead of fifth-place Moore.
Frotten now lives in Regina where she continues rehabilitation at the First Steps Wellness Centre and trains daily for her wheelchair racing career, with aspirations of making the national team for next year Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The 27-year-old is next off to the world wheelchair championships in Qatar before heading to Australia for a circuit of races.
