Tennis players warmed up the indoor courts over the weekend.

"The title ‘40 Below' was intended to be tongue-in-cheek – not a prediction,” Tennis Yukon president Stacy Lewis said.

Tennis Yukon held its 4th Annual 40 Below Indoor Tennis Tournament at the Yukon College gym Saturday and Sunday.

"In the winter it's so different for us because people just come to their lesson and leave, nobody sees anybody else ever, so it was half social, half competitive,” Lewis said.

Twenty kids and 15 adults participated in Tennis Yukon's only indoor tournament of the season.

Jaxson Fitzsimmons was perfect at 3-0 to take home first place in the 10-and-under round robin on Saturday.

"I was really pleased with the long rallies everyone was having,” coach Mike Russo said. "These were close matches and the kids played very well.”

Angus Clarke took top spot in the 12-and-under round robin while Matthias Hoenisch took second and Andrew Roberts finished third.

Trygg Jensen and Roan Evans-Ehricht finished first and second respectively in Pool A of the 14-and-under round robin, while Zach Gizci finished first and Ewan Halliday took second in Pool B.

Betty Irwin, Beth Ellis, Shannon Poelman, Anne Copland, Hoby Irwin, Nicole Pritchett, Carola Scheu, Mark Evans-Ehricht and Colleen Clark-Hoenisch battled it out in the adults division on day two.

Pritchett and Irwin finished with the best records in the group.

Eight doubles teams then took to the court, with Pritchett and Fleur Marsella finishing with the best record, followed by the father-son Evans-Ehricht team, and then Beth Ellis and Mike Pounder.

Ryan Lane, Kieran Halliday, Khang Pham and Roan Evans-Ehricht (and Ken Liao played in to add variety to the competition) rounded out the 18-and-under division. Halliday won first and Lane took runner up.

"We've seen a big improvement in these junior players in the last month,” head coach Jan Polivka said.

"We'll go to Juneau over March break for an intense week of play and competition, which should set us up well to start the outdoor season and the final preparations for Western Canada Summer Games.”

Added Lewis: "It was good, especially for the 18-and-under players, it was a really good chance to play a full match … they each had three matches yesterday, which was great. They just never get that kind of time and that kind of full-length situation, both physically and mentally.”
