Hot teams dominated in the closing tournament of the Whitehorse Co-ed Softball League.

Unity Clothing went undefeated through the weekend to win the 2B division in five games.

The Hyland Electric Padres also went undefeated to win the 2A division.

In the 3A division, the Masterbatters advanced to the final but lost to BV Minerals after beating them earlier in the tournament.

In division 3B, the Cardinal Contracting Cardinals won their first but lost their second to the Big Bear Offsales Cubs and then came up through the back door to defeat the Cubs in the final Sunday afternoon.

Northwestel went undefeated to win the 4B division.

And the Yukon College Thunder won all five of their games to take the title in the 4A division.

League president Harold Risby said it was a great season. Last week was the only time games were cancelled because of rain, he pointed out.

“Outside of that it was great weather all year.”

Risby said the season was a little different without having an A division but things went well.

In the 2B final, Unity Clothing got ahead of the BLC Group Knights and never relinquished the lead, ending with a 11-6 victory.

Technically, the Knights were probably the favourite, having finished the regular season with more wins than Unity Clothing.

“We are a tournament team,” Unity Clothing infielder Alcina Banks emphasized in the dugout shortly after the game. “We’re not a regular season team.”

“It was a fun game,” added Unity Clothing coach Logan Freese. “We’ve been playing those guys.”

Freese said the club brought their bats for the weekend, and it worked out.

“You score runs when you hit the ball,” said the coach who batted .666 in the final.

“I did not do that well but the rest of the team did,” said the modest coach. “It was great fun. We have a good core that has been together for hundreds, decades, of years.”
