CAN’T CONNECT – A Kane Dawe pass intended for Huskies captain Evan Campbell, centre, is intercepted by a Wild defender Sunday night at Takhini Arena.

Former captain praises new leader for heart, hustle

Awarding the Huskies captaincy to Evan Campbell was a no-brainer.

Awarding the Huskies captaincy to Evan Campbell was a no-brainer.

“He’s the right guy for the job,” said last year’s captain Jared Tuton, who will wear an A on his shirt this season.

“I couldn’t think of a better person to have it. He’s got all the tools. He’s going to be on the team forever, and everyone listens to him. He’s a good player and a real good guy in the dressing room.”

“We’re in it for the long run,” the 30-year-old blue-liner added.

Tuton, who is now living in Grand Prairie, Alta., missed the Huskies’ first series this past weekend.

Head coach Mike Tuton said the captaincy shuffle was his younger brother’s idea.

“He didn’t feel right having the C and not practising all the hours that these guys are putting in,” he said last week. “He approached me in the fall and told me he didn’t quite feel right about it.

“So we had a conversation that lasted about five seconds, and the name we came up with was Evan Campbell.”

Coach Tuton praised the five-foot-10, 195-pound winger for his commitment to the team.

“You want to talk about a heart-and-soul guy ... He’s never missed a practice, never taken a practice off. Every shift, he gives you everything and that’s the kind of leadership that we’re after.”

Campbell, 25, said wearing the C for Yukon’s senior hockey team is an honour.

“It’s nice to get that recognition from, not only the coaching staff, but the other players on the team,” he said.

Campbell, whose older brother Reid Campbell is playing pro hockey in Mississippi, is no stranger to leadership positions.

He previously captained the Jr. B Peninsula Panthers in North Saanich, B.C., and also wore a letter with the Mustangs.

Campbell had a quiet opening weekend by his standards, registering just one assist on Kane Dawe’s first-period goal Saturday night.
