Three teams participated in the Soccer Legends Tournament that took place over the weekend, down from the four that were expected to attend.
The tournament, hosted by the Whitehorse Soccer Legends was for men 50 and older, and woman 19 and over. This was the second year the tournament has been held.
"In our first tournament we had four teams,” said Tim Shoniker, one of the organizers.
A team from Juneau was expected to make the trip down, but were unable to make it at the last minute.
"We were planning for four teams again so when Juneau dropped out we were scrambling,” said Shoniker.
Also complicating the tournament was H1N1, which Shoniker himself contracted, causing delays in planning.
"I was ill for four full weeks before the tournament,” he said.
The tournament fell on a busy weekend for the sporting community in Whitehorse.
"I would say that it was a busy weekend on many fronts,” said Shoniker. This weekend there was a broomball tournament, first aid clinic, soccer camp, and the flu season topped it all off to keep a few players off the pitch.
Despite the numerous complications the teams that did show up had a great time, and great soccer was played, Shoniker said.
"The weekend went well,” he said. "The players all had enjoyable games.”
The three teams that participated were the Raven Recycling Reusables, the Real Foods Catering and Market Haus Hawaiians, and the Yukon Brewing Co. Lead Dogs.
Raven Recycling won the tournament in a 5 to 3 final match against Real Food Catering and Market Haus.
Raven Recycling's Hanna Weber had one goal and Mehrdad Tirgar finished up the team's scoring with three until Shoniker scored an own goal bringing the Reusables up to five. Chantal Beaudin scored one and Laura Pyke had two goals for RealFood.
"I believe that the games this weekend again proved that good team play, lots of passing, short shifts and awesome goal keeping make for exciting games for all,” said Shoniker. "The teams that exhibited these actions the most came out the winners.”
Also a success this weekend was the number of girls – many of them never had competing in a soccer tournament before – who came out.
"While we all had fun playing, we were able to get some ladies out to play competitive co-ed soccer for the first time and they really had a great time.” said Shoniker.
