Another oldtimer hockey season got underway in the Yukon capital this week.

The AON Flames rapped off two quick wins to start their season, beating last year’s championship-winning Firth Rangers 2-1 at Takhini Arena last night to improve to 2-0.

Flames centre John Pereira buried the winner past goalie Jon Heaton in the middle of the second period.

Jeff Jensen scored the first goal for the Flames, who clawed back from an early 1-0 deficit on a goal scored by Jason Cunning.

Last season, the Rangers beat EDI 2-1 to win the league trophy.

In their first game of the season Sunday, AON edged Medicine Chest 3-2 at the Canada Games Centre thanks to two second period goals by Stu MacKay.

Mike Gau’s goal, from MacKay, had put AON up 1-0 before Peter Johnston and Darnell Kiriak scored to put Medicine Chest up 2-1 early in the second period.

The two early wins give the Flames an early grasp of first place, alongside Kilrich.

Kilrich also improved to 2-0 last night by hammering a shorthanded EDI squad 6-1.

Lorne Burnett and Elgin Schwantz both scored twice on EDI goalie Kyle Martsinkiw. Murray Arsenault and Kerry Pettitt also scored in the win.

Guy Gorrell had two assists giving him five points in two games and the early scoring lead.

Paul Lackowicz scored the only goal for EDI in the loss.

On Sunday, Kilrich beat Yukon Inn 5-1 thanks to a pair of snipes from Trevor Hale.

Gorrell, Brian Currie and Schwantz added singles, while Greg Charlie scored Yukon Inn’s only goal of the game.

In other early-season action from Sunday, EDI tied Air North 2-2 and the Klondyke Dental Molars beat the Rangers 6-5.

Phil Borgel and Chris Simons scored for EDI in the tie, with Bryce Bekar and Jared Barrault responding for Air North.

Meanwhile, Mike Knutson scored twice to lead the Molars to victory, with teammates Gregor Gabb, Tony Park, Mike Jim and Greg Bull also denting the twine.

Blayne Monahan led Firth with two goals, with Les Luciuk, Brent Stokes and Cunning adding singles.

League play continues tonight with Yukon Inn facing off with Air North and the Klondyke Dental facing Medicine Chest.
