The Firth Rangers scored three goals in the first period and added one more for insurance in the second to get the victory on Wednesday in the Oldtimers Hockey League.
Last night's 4-1 win over Edgewater Hotel helped continue what has been, so far, a great season for the Rangers, who have one of the best records in the league.
'It was a good game,' said Derrick Hynes, a forward on the Firth Rangers. 'We played pretty well at both ends of the ice.'
The Rangers didn't waste any time, coming out strong and forcing Edgewater goaltender John Grant to make a number of difficult saves from very early on in the game. Despite the efforts of the Edgewater netminder, Firth scored the first goal less than two minutes into the game.
The goal was scored by Joel Witten and came right after Grant made a great save, where he managed to square his body to the puck on a hard shot that came from deep inside the zone.
Firth didn't let up and not even 10 minutes later they added another goal, after goaltender Grant went down in attempt to block the lower part of the net. John Skilnyk was able to slide it past the sprawling Grant.
Witten put the Rangers ahead by three goals with 7:56 left to go in the period on a nice snap shot that found the far side of the net.
Despite being down 3-0, Edgewater didn't give up and with less than five minutes remaining on the clock, the team scored on a snap shot, which eluded the Ranger goaltender.
The late goal seemed to spark the Edgewater squad, who came out strong in the second, putting lots of pressure on their opponents.
Firth was content to play a more defensively-minded game with the three-goal lead and Edgewater nearly made them regret it at the 15-minute mark. Edgewater hit the post on a shot that, despite a valiant effort, had Ranger goaltender, Mike Hawkins, clearly beat.
The Rangers took full advantage of this lucky break and would score with just under five minutes to go in the game, putting the contest out of reach.
All four Ranger goals were scored by the same line. Skilnyk finished the game with two assists, while Witten and Bruce Williams each added one.
Hynes said the turning point of the game was being able to get the fourth goal after Edgewater hit the post.
He praised the team's goal scoring line, crediting them for being one of the reasons that Firth was able to get the win.
'They were on fire tonight,' he said. 'Those two guys, Joel and John, they were really clicking.'
When asked if they were the team's top line, Hynes laughed and said 'They were tonight.'
Hynes said that Edgewater has been a tough opponent to beat this season.
'This team, although they are quite behind us in the standings, they always give us a hard time,' he said. 'I think we have tied them twice and beaten them once. We have always had very close games with them, but we are way ahead of them in the standings, so there is something about them. They seem to really play well when we play them.'
