The Firth Rangers are starting to develop a reputation in the Whitehorse Oldtimers Hockey League for being able to overcome any deficit.
The Firth Rangers are starting to develop a reputation in the Whitehorse Oldtimers Hockey League for being able to overcome any deficit.
Trailing 3-0 halfway through the first period, Firth stormed back, scoring four straight goals in Wednesday's 4-3 victory over Edgewater Hotel.
This was the second time in two weeks that Firth was able to come back after being down 3-0 to Edgewater, however this time the outcome ended in a victory instead of a tie.
The come back was sparked by a mid-first period goal that was followed by a strong second frame where Firth scored three goals in less than 10 minutes.
"In the second period we did a lot better," said Firth defenceman Bruce Demchuck.
"The key part of course was skating, you can always win when you do that. It was another one of our good come from behind efforts."
Edgewater Hotel got off to a quick start in the contest netting the opening goal at 17:46 and the second not even one minute later.
Morley Lessard scored Edgewater's first goal, while Roger Hewlett netted the team's second on the breakaway after being set up by a pass from Rick Seaman.
Just under the halfway mark of the period, Edgewater added to its lead. The team's third tally came less than 30 seconds after a Firth goal was called back because it was kicked in.
Brent Stokes netted the goal, which was scored on the rush on a shot that was fired right through goalie Gord Puddister's five hole. Stokes' goal was set up by Gord Peterson.
With just over nine minutes remaining in the period, the Rangers answered back.
The team's first goal came in an entertaining play when Ron Limoges beat Edgewater goaltender's John Grant to the puck after it was sent down the ice by Stu Mackay.
Limoges showed off his skating skills, getting to the puck and then making a nice move to get around Grant before firing a shot into the open cage.
"Your wheels did that one Ronny," a Ranger player exclaimed as Limoges skated towards the bench.
Firth seemed to be sparked by the goal and maintained the pressure for the rest of the first period.
However despite their efforts, the Firth players were unable to find the back of the net again and the score remained 3-1 at the conclusion of the opening 22 minutes.
Ranger players Carl Burgess and Gerald Haase each scored early on in the second frame, tying up the contest at 3-3.
The players on the Rangers bench pounded their sticks against the boards, cheering loudly after Haase netted their third goal.
The score remained tied at three until the final eight minutes when Ed van Randen fired a perfectly placed wrist shot that got through a crowd in front of the Edgewater net.
Edgewater kicked it up a notch towards the end of the game, but despite their efforts, which included pulling Grant in the final minute, the Rangers were able to hold to win the contest.
In other Whitehorse Oldtimers Hockey League action, members of the Klondyke Dental Molars played their way to a 6-1 victory over Kilrich on Wednesday.
The Dental Donkeys took a 2-1 lead into the second frame, before adding four more goals to put the game out of reach.

Alain Pelletier led the way for the Dental Molars, scoring two goals and adding two assists, while Rob Millar and Paul Sahagian also played very well each scoring once and contributing one assist.
Other goal scorers on the Dental Molars included Les Luciak and Lance Bevilacqua.
Laurie Malo was also a big part of the Dental Molars win, finishing with four assists, while Guy Morgan contributed a pair of assists in the team's victory.
Joel Witten scored Kilrich's lone goal, which was assisted by Pat Michael and Andy McLeod.
