Whitehorse will host the Bob Park International Fastball Tournament this weekend, the city's first fastball tournament.
2010 is the second year fastball has been in the city, and the first tournament is something organizers hope will become an annual event.
The only other fastball tournament in the Yukon is in Dawson City, said Josh Clarke, an executive for Fastball Yukon.
For the first edition, four local teams will be joined by a team from Inuvik and one from Dawson.
"We're looking forward to it, I think it's going to be a great weekend for baseball,” Clarke said.
The tournament will have two different divisions, with each made up of two local teams and one of the visiting teams. The first games will be a round robin format.
The teams that make it out of the divisions will play cross-over games until the finals.
First place will be $2,500 for the top team, $1,200 for the second place team and $800 for the third place team.
The entry fee is $800 per team, and each team will have about 12 players.
The Pepsi Softball Centre will be downsized to the regulation fastball size of 265 feet using fences contributed by sponsors.
"We want to invite everybody out,” Clarke said.
The tournament will be played ahead of the U.S. and Canadian women's fast pitch teams playing two exhibition games on July 13 and 14.
Clarke said the tournament will help bring the community back to fastball as Whitehorse prepares to host the 2012 ISF Women's World Championships.
