The 2021 Youth Outdoor Soccer Championships were hosted by Yukon Soccer Association June 11-13.
The 2021 Youth Outdoor Soccer Championships were hosted by Yukon Soccer Association June 11-13.
This is the first tournament to be hosted on the new artificial turf facility at F.H. Collins Secondary School, which was the venue for U13 boys and girls divisions.
The U13 girls division was particularly close, with a penalty shootout needed to decide both the bronze and gold medal games. Bronze was earned by Whitehorse Team B, while silver went to Dawson City and gold to Haines Junction. U13 boys were also tight, with Whitehorse Team A taking bronze after yet another penalty shoot-out, while the silver and bronze were both claimed by Dawson teams after a nail-biter decided in extra time.
U11 girls was an all-Whitehorse category, with medals awarded to Team A (bronze), Team C (silver) and Team B (gold). U11 Boys featured a Dawson team which finished with bronze medals, and two Whitehorse teams playing in the final. Silver medals went to Team B, and gold medals went to Team F.U9 players participated in a jamboree series of mini-games, with a focus on fun and all players getting maximum touches on the ball.Much thanks to all the people and organizations that make these games possible.
The organizers – you know who you are, the referees, coaches, parents, and, of course, the players! And a final thank you to the U17 Women’s Team Yukon, who ran an excellent, COVID-safe fundraiser concession, and to Save-on-Foods and The Claim café for donating their products.
The 2021 championships were a success, and we are already looking forward to next season!
