The YukonYouth Climbing Team held their first bouldering competition this past weekend at F.H. Collins Secondary School.

The club had a great turnout of 25 participants for the first competition of the year.

"I'm quite happy, I had a good turnout, around 25 people,” said Alain Dallaire, an organizer of the club.

Dallaire said this is climbing's off season, and he was happy to see so many adults out over the weekend.

"A few people that are climbing in the summer showed up,” Dallaire said.

One of the standouts of the meet was Maxime Parker, who was the overall winner with 429 points.

This was the first competition of 2010, Dallaire said, after a successful one in 2009.

"It's been awhile since we organized one,” he said.

The club plans to send a few youth to a provincial competition around the end of March or April.

They also hope to host another one in June.

The participants in the competition had two hours to climb 19 walls set up by Dallaire and another organizer.

Each wall ranged in difficulty from one to 19, with 19 being the most difficult.

Each climber would tackle each wall and scored points based on the difficulty.

For each wall that they climbed the first time without any assistance they received the full amount of points plus two bonus points.

If they required assistance or were unsuccessful at their first attempt, the climber did not receive the bonus points.

This past weekend, the top place finisher overall was Maxime Parker in the male 15-18 category, who scored 429 points after the two-hour time limit.

The overall category was dominated by youth, including Parker and a tie for second place between Seamus Beairsto in the male 15-18 category, and Calden Hoefs in the male 14 and under category with 425 points.

In the open females, Holly Goulding dominated the category with 293 points over Emeraude Dallaire's 164.

Emeraude Dallaire won her category of female 14 and under by four points.

The Yukon Youth Climbing Team meets two days a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays at the F.H. Collins climbing wall.

Youth ages 12 to 17 years-old are welcome to participate.
