The Burnt Toast Fireballs finally extracted some revenge on their main women’s hockey rivals Friday night.
Led by sniper Nicole Belanger’s two goals, the Fireballs won the Whitehorse women’s league championship with a 4-2 victory over the H&R Block Shamrockers.
The victory was a sweet one for the Fireballs, who finished the regular season one point behind the Shamrockers, and lost their first playoff matchup by a score of 3-0.
“We came out of the gate ready to put our best game on the ice,” said Fireballs captain and goaltender Chase Blodgett.
“After being first place all year, we lost it in the final game to them. And then we lost earlier in the playoff round when we went head-to-head.”
Right from the opening faceoff at the Canada Games Centre, the Fireballs began applying pressure, and were rewarded with two early goals from Belanger within a one-minute span for a 2-0 lead.
Both goals seemed to catch Shamrockers goalie Krystal Feres off guard.
The first goal came on a quick shot out of the corner and the second saw a slapshot bounce up off Feres’ equipment and then dribble into the net.
The offensive onslaught continued into the second, when slick-skating defenceman Steph Hedley ripped a shot past Feres, followed by a snipe from Anna Peacock to make it 4-0.
But the Shamrockers refused to go down quietly.
Before the second period ended, centre Talyce Henkel had pulled her team back in it with two goals to make the score 4-2.
Henkel’s first came on a pretty deke and the second came on a Bobby Orr-like snipe that saw her fly airborne across the crease following her shot.
“We were a little bit down on ourselves because we were down 4-0,” Henkel said post-game.
“I think the team saw my drive and determination and everybody kind of picked up. We started playing together again.”
Following their first loss to the Shamrockers in the playoffs, the Fireballs altered their lineup for the championship final, said Hedley, who led the team in scoring with 27 goals and 27 helpers in 31 games this season.
On Blodgett’s advice, a power line of Belanger, Adrienne Dewhurst and Anna Peacock was formed, while Hedley herself moved back from centre to defence.
The team also adopted a dump-and-chase mentality, which was successful in the first period.
“That hoisting of the cup was pretty awesome afterwards,” Hedley said. “I haven’t won it since the first year I was here in 2009.”
The team worked hard to instill energy in the dressing room all year.
“We tried to get it like a group of friends coming together and playing hockey, so you wanted to be there every game and have fun, laugh,” said Hedley.
On Thursday, Burnt Toast came back to beat Hvachtech Systems (blue) 3-2 to earn the rematch with H&R Block.
Each team had healthy fan support for the final match of the season, though the Fireballs fans were much more vocal.
Some waved flags and toast-shaped foam hands while others banged noisemakers after each Burnt Toast goal or save.
“Our sponsors were in the stands, so we really wanted to win it for them,” said Blodgett. “We’ve had the best fans. Everybody’s rooting for you and you’re winning as a team and a community. ... We live it, we breathe it, we love it. It’s all fun.”
Meanwhile, the Shamrockers aren’t about to hang their heads following the loss, said Henkel.
“We just came in to have fun, play our game, and enjoy our last game together,” she said. “We’re totally happy. I think we did good ... we grew together as a team, which is what we wanted to do.”
