Fifth annual Whitehorse Dri-Tri about atmosphere more than results

Evidently, the Whitehorse Dri-Tri is less about results than it is about the atmosphere.

Evidently, the Whitehorse Dri-Tri is less about results than it is about the atmosphere.

"You try to create an event that has a certain atmosphere and a certain culture around it, but it totally depends on the people who come out to this thing, and the people who come out to it, are without exception there to have a good time, to just enjoy being outside,” co-organizer Ian Parker said.

"They're all like-minded people, to the point that very few people inquire about the results. Nobody really seems that worried about it, which is kind of cool.”

The dry-triathlon – which involves cycling and running without the swimming component – took place at the Takhini Hot Springs on Saturday.

Competitors tackled one running lap of a four-kilometre loop and hopped on their bikes to do three laps – totaling roughly 14 kilometres – before running two more loops.

Most importantly, the race's base camp was at the BBQ behind the hot springs, where tuckered athletes enjoyed some food and refreshments.

"From the moment we conceived of this event, we had a few key elements that we wanted to have; we wanted to have a really nice setting, we wanted it to be really laid back but still fairly competitive, and we wanted to have a really good party with a really good BBQ afterwards,” Parker said.

This year's Dri-Tri, which Parker also described as an off-road duathlon, had a unique theme – 80s hip hop.

The promotional poster, designed by Monika Melnychuk, even featured early 80s iconic hip hop images.

"One of the prizes we gave out this year was actually a mixed tape of 80s rap and hip hop that we made,” Parker said.

"It was cool, and kind of funny, because no one has anything to play a mixed tape on anymore, but that wasn't the point.”

Parker chose to not participate in the event, not an easy decision given his background.

An avid cyclist, Parker most recently put his energy toward the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay from Haines Junction to Haines, Alaska, which paid off.

As a solo rider, Parker finished second overall in a time of six hours, eight minutes and 37 seconds.

Parker said being on the organizational side of a local event is a good change.

"For this one we're usually so exhausted by the time the actual starting gun goes off, that I'm pretty happy just to have a beer, listen to music and cheer for people, get the food ready. So I don't feel too choked about it.

"But anyone who's active at all feels slightly guilty when everyone else is running and being active and all you're doing is drinking beer and eating food, because the beer tastes better and the food definitely tastes better when you've earned it.”

Perhaps next year he'll earn it.

"This was the first year where I went, ‘Man, I really should have done it this year.' I have to admit, the events that I volunteered for in the past, cycling events, I watch those guys ride going, ‘This looks really fun.' But I do believe strongly that everyone should take a turn volunteering at some point so it's not like I begrudge it,” Parker said.
