Family ties strong at Baked One Miler

The Baked One Miler began with a false start.

The Baked One Miler began with a false start.

The start pistol, raised in the air by Don White, failed to fire.

A second later, with wife Marg on the phone standing exactly one mile down the trail with the finish clock, and the kids with their fingers stuffed into their ears, the pistol rang.

Thirteen-year-old Isaac O’Brien was the first off the line, stride already lengthening for the six-minute effort ahead.

“I just started off quick and then put in a bit slower of a pace just to stay in the lead,” he said.

“After a bit, like the last 400 metres, you get really tired and it’s sometimes too fast and it hurts a lot.”

O’Brien has had a busy summer. He competed at the North American Indigenous Games on the athletics team and attended the Jack Brow track and field meet in B.C. Now, O’Brien is gearing up for cross-country season.

Close behind him were walkers John Storms and Bonnie Love, the Yu Schott family and Anett Kralisch and her daughter, Emily.

For the Yu Schotts, attending events like this as a family are a way to encourage their kids to lead healthy, active lives.

“We like that healthy life balance kind of thing and so we’re wanting to show them that to be active is just a natural part of how we are,” said Melissa Yu Schott.

She and husband Ben run with their kids, seven-year-old Cali and six-year-old Theo and have attended a number of the Tuesday night fun runs at F.H. Collins, going as far and fast as the kids want.

“It has a real community feel,” said Yu Schott.

At the one-mile race, O’Brien pulled off the win, beating his previous best time on the course to finish in six minutes 14 seconds. Ben Yu Schott was second in 9:35, while Theo Yu Schott was third in 10:56.

Cali Yu Schott was the top female of the night, finishing with her dad in 9:35, while Melissa Yu Schott was second, running with Theo in 10:56. Rounding out the podium was the mother-daughter duo of Anett Kralisch and Emily Kralisch-Seguin, who tied for third in 11:45.

Bonnie Love was the top female walker in 11:04.

John Storms was the top male walker in 7:58.

The next Athletics Yukon race is the Claim Pre-Skagway 10 Miler, which starts Sunday at 10 a.m. from Rotary Peace Park.
