On Tuesday, the much anticipated ElderActive Recreation Association Sports Day in Teslin finally arrived.

Twenty eight people bordered the "delayed" bus in Whitehorse at 9 a.m., traveled the Alaska Highway picking up two more people, and then stopped at Jakes Corner to pick up people from Tagish and Atlin, before reaching Teslin at 11 a.m.

Ken and Dorothy Burke had traveled by vehicle with two carpets to Teslin arriving at 9:30 a.m., so that everything was set up and ready to go when the bus finally arrived.

Coffee and snacks was readily available for those who wanted anything.

Carpet bowling teams were quickly formed by pulling numbers and the first games got started immediately.

June Raymond and Elene Boyle got the floor shuffleboard underway soon after. Participants not playing carpet games had a number of card games to occupy themselves with.

Teslin's community centre hosted the event, which featured a number of different activities, including carpet bowling, floor shuffle board and card games.

There was only three carpet bowling carpets and eight teams playing, which kept the games rolling consecutively, as fast as possible.

Eight ends were played in most of the games.

Team Five placed first with 41 points, while Team Three came in second with 37 points and Team Four rounded out the top three with 24 points.

The five communities - Whitehorse, Faro, Tagish Atlin and Teslin were equally represented on the eight teams.

There were three teams of floor shuffleboarders from Whitehorse. The three teams were able to play four games totaling the points from each game.

Team Three, consisting of Elene Boyle and June Raymond, finished in the top spot.

Whitehorse residents had luck on their side in the card games, sweeping the top three spots in cribbage.

Helen Penney came in first, while Marg Baker placed in second and Betty Hebert took third.

Ben Schonewille, who coordinated the event, managed to obtain various prizes donations from Deadman Creek Enterprises, Village of Teslin, the Hockey Club, Yukon Motel and the Nisutlin Trading Post.

The prizes were a welcome surprise and very much appreciated. There were enough for everyone to select an item.

A big "Thank You" was given to the Teslin group for holding such a great event and participants are looking forward to next year's event.

The ElderActive Recreation Association will hold another games day on May 8 in Whitehorse. Whitehorse's Games Day usually averages around 85 people, out of the organization's approximately 300 members.

"Everybody always has a wonderful time," said Michael Brauer, a past-president of the organization. "Our main aim is to get seniors active, both physically and mentally. Not just in the city, but as far as we can go, the whole territory."
