Edgewater Hotel hasn't had a whole lot of lucky breaks so far this season in the Oldtimers Hockey League, but last night the team didn't need luck to get the victory. They just played a great game.
Edgewater never fell behind throughout the course of the 44 minute game and showed tremendous spirit in holding off a determined Klondyke Dental Molars team to win 3-2.
'We played much better as a team,' said John Grant, the goalie for Edgewater. 'I think we are confident we can play with most of the teams here.'
Edgewater started the game off in fast-paced form. Dave Milne scored for the team in the first five minutes and that seemed to set the tempo for the rest of the team. They carried the momentum throughout the first half of the period and increased their lead to two goals after Sean McLoish scored at the 12 minute mark.
Despite being down by two goals, Klondyke didn't give up and in the last five minutes of the period managed to score on a nice snap shot by Jim Barker. This cut the lead to one and that's all it would take to light a fire under the Dental Molar team, who carried their good play into the second period.
Despite a valiant effort from Grant, it didn't take the Molars long to tie the game up. Jim Barker scored his second goal of the evening at just over ten minutes into the second.
Both teams traded chances into the later stage of the period, but it wasn't until a penalty was called against Klondyke that Edgewater had their first great opportunity to retake the lead. Edgewater didn't waste any time taking advantage of their only power play of the game. Scott Lowery scored on a nice play where he managed to pull the goalie out and then brought the puck across before putting it up into the net.
The Klondyke players showed a lot of heart in their efforts to tie the game again, which kept Grant on his toes right up until the final seconds of the game when Terry Jackson had the final scoring chance after being left wide open at the far blue line.
Jackson made an incredible play where he relayed a pass attempt off his skate and onto his stick, giving him an outright breakaway on Grant. In a thrilling play, Grant managed to get a toe on the shot, deflecting it out of harm's way just before the buzzer sounded, securing the win for Edgewater.
Jackson said his team played pretty well, despite losing the game.
'We had a slow start, but came on in the second period,' he said. 'We had a lot of chances, but just couldn't put the puck in the net.'
He said Grant made an 'unbelievable save' in the last play of the game.
Grant was modest when talking about the save, saying that he got 'lucky.'
'Those saves are really satisfying especially when you win by one goal,' he said.
Grant said this was his team's best game of the season.
'We have a good team, but we have to work hard, every game, every period,' he said. 'We have not traditionally been scoring a lot of goals, so this was good.'
He hopes the team will be able to carry over their strong play into the remainder of the season.
'We will see what happens on Sunday,' he said. 'I think that the win will be a good test for us to see if we can keep it going.'
