Earls "Guys and Girls" are proving they are a far better team than their regular season record in the Whitehorse Co-ed Slo-Pitch League let on.
In a David vs. Goliath type scenario, Earls was victorious over first-place powerhouse Tlingit Electric by a convincing score of 11-6 Thursday at Whitehorse's Pepsi Softball Centre.
The Guys and Girls, who went 5-10-2, which placed them fifth in the standings, are currently undefeated in the playoffs with a record of 2-0.
The main challenge for Earls this season has been fielding a full team of at least five guys and five girls. Nine of the team's losses were a result of having to forfeit because of not having enough players.
"I've said earlier and throughout the whole season, if we showed up with a team, we had a really good record," said Blaine Demchuk, team coach and player. "We have really good girls and a really solid core of guys that get along really well and our two pickups we made for the playoffs are very solid players too."
The game may have ended favourably for Earls, but it didn't begin that way as the team struggled offensively with bringing in runs. For the first couple of innings, the squad had some trouble getting clutch hits with runners on, which resulted in a lot of flyouts.
Tlingit Electric didn't waste any time taking advantage of the Guys and Girls offensive struggles, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
The runs were scored on a clutch home run after the Guys and Girls began the inning by recording two quick outs.
With two outs, Tlingit Electric went to work, getting two runners on base after they both singled up the middle. The very next batter made no mistake, driving a deep shot over the centre field fence to give his team the 3-0 advantage.
Despite giving up the two-run shot, the Earls group was able to get out of the first inning without any more damage being done after the sixth batter for Tlingit Electric drilled a liner, which was caught and held by the Guys and Girls shortstop.
Players on both teams showcased their defensive expertise in the second and third innings, preventing any runs from being scored.
The Earls bats started warming up in the fourth inning. The team started the inning off on the right foot, getting two runners on with just one out.
A pop out to centre field resulted in the team's second out, but this time around, Earls wasn't about to end the inning without scoring a run of its own.
The team scored a little infield blooper, which just managed to stay fair to the excitement of the Earls bench.
"It doesn't get any better than that," yelled out one of the players on Earls.
However, on the next play Tlingit Electric showed why they were the best team in the A division, getting out of the inning after the pitcher fielded a grounder and quickly tossed it to first.
The team cashed in a couple more runs on a clutch double, which soared over the head of the Earls' centre fielder. The Guys and Girls recorded one more out to end the inning with the score 5-1, heading into the top of fifth.
With two runners on and two outs, a player on Earls connected for the team's first home run shot, bringing the team right back into the contest. Earls added one more run to its total before the inning concluded to take a 5-5 tie into the bottom half of the fifth.
After shutting down Tlingit Electric in the top of the fifth, the Guys and Girls posted another run, on another clutch home run, to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
For a third straight inning, Earls would shutout Tlingit Electric. The team concluded the inning with a beautiful double play after a ground ball was hit to the pitcher.
In the final inning of the game, Earls would blow the contest wide open, curtesy of a few timely hits and its third home run of the contest.
With one on and one out, the team hit its final home run of the contest to increase the lead to 8-5.
Playing perfect small ball, Earls players were able to get the timely hits needed to post five more runs before the conclusion of the inning. The team took a commanding six run lead into the bottom of the final inning.
After giving up one run and with runners on second and third, Earls ended the game after a flyball was hit and caught by the team's centre fielder.
Demchuk, who is also affectionately referred to by fellow teammates as Bubba, said the fourth inning was the real turning point of the game.
"It gave us a little more confidence because I think our first three innings all of our guys popped up, but all of our girls were on base," he said. "So we weren't moving them around."
He said he's confident heading into the championship game.
"You have to be a little confident," Demchuk said. "If we have a team here, we will feel good."
