Haines Junction put its name on the soccer map last weekend.
Haines Junction put its name on the soccer map last weekend.
Competing at the Northwest Territories School Soccer Championships, also known as Super Soccer 2015, the Haines Junction Eagles snagged two medals – including gold in the Grade 8 division and tied for bronze in the Grade 6 category.
The Grade 8 Eagles became the first Yukon club to win a division at the tournament with a 4-0 shutout victory over Range Lake in the championship final last Sunday.
The win capped a tournament that saw the Grade 8 team from St. Elias Community School go 7-0 in the 10-team division.
“I was pretty happy,” Eagles manager Dave Weir told the Star. “They placed strongly. The tournament worked out really well and we’re definitely looking at returning.”
Games were played from Thursday to Sunday in a five-on-five format plus keepers.
Meanwhile, the Grade 6 team won five straight games over their N.W.T. rivals before dropping a semifinal contest to William McDonald 6-3.
They finished in a third-place tie as bronze medal games were not played. The Grade 6 boys division consisted of 14 teams.
Grade 6 games consisted of 4-on-4 action plus keepers.
“It was different from the tournaments our kids usually go to in that it was a school tournament,” Weir said. “There was a lot of teams participating from Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
“We were the only teams from Yukon and they made quite a positive impression in Yellowknife.”
Both teams earned sportsmanship awards in their divisions.
Coached by Derric Lewis, members of the Grade 8 team were: Josh Dulac, Trevor Jones, Douglas McKinnon, Mya Kinney, Dawson Weir, Ole Heath and Kaelen Lewis.
The Grade 6 team roster included: Jacob Dulac, Joah Thompson, Jason Symanski, Jonas Shaerig, Ecko Kirk, Psalm Clunies-Ross, Callum Weir and Ian Paton. They were coached by Cindi Cowie.
Each team had one female player on the roster. Lewis and Paton were called in from Whitehorse to round out the rosters.
“One of the great things about the tournament was a real cross-section of abilities,” Weir said.
The trip doubled as an educational opportunity, he added.
“It wasn’t just about soccer,” he said. “The kids went on a tour of the legislative assembly and the cultural centre. They saw some of Yellowknife. Part of the idea was just to expose those kids to that social scene.”
The team billeted in a school with seven other teams and were able to meet many players from across the North.
