Dustball 2019 championship round-up

In Monday's edition of the Star, we looked at the women and men's A division winners. A quick refresher. The Crew was able to stage a comeback in the seventh inning to tie the game at 13 and send it to extra innings against the reigning champions RBI.

In the extra inning, the at-bat team started with a runner on second base and an out. The Crew didn't allow the RBI side to move the baserunner and shut them down with their chance to take their first lead of the game and take the win.

The Crew's first batter, Florence Kushniruk, hit a hard line drive past the RBI shortstop allowing the runner on second to score.

In the Men's A division championship game, the two-time defending champions, the P&M Recycling Guns, took on the Chico's, who hail from Skagway. The game was a rematch of last year's title match.

The Chico's ended the Guns two-year run atop the Men's A division cruising to a 14-5 victory. The Chico's used hot bats and sound defence to take the Guns out of their rhythm.

Sunday at the Pepsi Softball Centre was championship day, as a total of nine title games were played.

Let's begin with the Co-ed A division, where Dustball has a three-time defending champion. The Backdoor Sliders outlasted the Fountain Tire Mudders for the repeat. Of note, last year the Sliders were known as the Great West Grizzlies.

The Padres were the third runner-up.

Moving to the Co-ed B pool, Team Whitty was able to avenge their Saturday loss to the White Pass to earn their title. Team Whitty needed to defeat the third-place team, CRB Hawks, to make the final.

TLC Massage showed plenty of tender love and care in their play as they earned the Co-ed C crown, downing the Aklak Air Falcons. The Falcons dispatched the Cereal Killers to earn the right to play for the championship.

The Big Bear Cubs won the Co-ed D division after beating the Jiffy Lube squad on Saturday and Sunday.

The COREGEO Dirt Diamonds downed Booster Juice, the defending Women's B champion, on Sunday. The Dirt Diamonds had to get past the third-place team, Fly Ballers, to get into the championship.

The Men's C champs were the Kaska Grizzlies who downed the Dirty Sox. The Rounders were able to hold off The Ducks in the Men's B championships game.

Before Dustball started, I wrote about the excitement and the buzz around the tournament in the months leading up to it.

The hype was real. What a great weekend, and congratulations to all the champions.
