On a lazy Sunday evening, dogs and their humans tackled a race loop off Annie Lake Road in the Dog Powered Sports Association Yukon’s (DPSAY) second summer Hot Hound Race.

Adam Robinson won both the one-mile bike and the canicross, while Cynthia Corriveau edged him out to him the two-mile bike.

At her second canicross race, Jaclyn Killins took fourth in a time of 7:30. In canicross, the runner is attached by way of waist harness to their dog. The team then runs together over a one-mile course.

“I hate running, but with him in front of me it’s so much fun,” said Killins after the race in between sips from her Camelbak. “He takes my mind off of everything.

“It’s a cool partnership. It’s like a wingman that runs with you. You feel comfortable and safe.”

Sophie Firmenich, who competed in the two-mile bike, hopes that more people come out for their next event.

“We call it a race, but it’s not a race. It’s more like a friendly competition,” she said.

After the events, the small group of eight gathered on the porch for a potluck dinner and friendly conversation.

While Firmenich says they cover a lot of ground, the main topic of conversation usually: dogs.
