The Filipino Canadian Basketball League of Yukon (FCBLY) had a full slate of games both Saturday and Sunday at the Canada Games Centre. The games are a continuation of the FCBLY’s 13th season, which was delayed because of the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Like the week before, the new FIBA rule was in place, where the ball was swapped out between breaks in play for one that had been sanitized.
The under 35 final was the first game played on the weekend between Domino’s Pizza and Elias Dental. Domino’s earned its spot in the final with a convincing 97-72 win over Silver in the first game of the semifinals.
Last weekend, Elias Dental outlasted Viernes Janitorial 81-73 to secure their spot in the championship round – which is a best of three series.
Domino’s used a strong second half to pull ahead of their rival and take the first game of the series 80-69.
To start the game it was all Elias Dental. They had a strong first stanza and led 20-14 after one.
Domino’s began to find their game in the second quarter, scoring 25 points in the frame. However, Elias Dental was equal to the task, although they did see their lead dwindle to two, 41-39 heading into halftime.
It was after the break that Domino’s began to pull away. They picked up their game and scored a blistering 25 points in the frame, compared to Elias Dental’s 12, to take an 11 point advantage heading into the final quarter.
Domino’s maintained their lead, as the team’s played equal basketball. Both sides managed 16 points in the fourth, that 11 point lead stood as the final buzzer sounded.
A couple of Hermosas, Bryan and Ralph, led the way for Domino’s, and all scorers, with 18 points each. Ian New added 15 for the pizza crew.
Kevin Octavio paced Elias Dental with 16 points. Kevin Martin chipped in 13 and Josh Aying had 12.
Elias Dental will look to even the series next Saturday, while Domino’s will look to be named the 13th season’s under 35 champions.
On Sunday, the first seeded Whitehorse Subaru squared off against the fourth-seeded Tim Hortons in the first semifinal game of the over 35 division.
Subaru got off to a driving start, building a big lead that Tim Hortons never threatened on their way to winning 104-61.
In the first quarter, Subaru used a stifling two-one-two zone to squash any Tim Hortons offensive rhythm. Their stout defence translated to fastbreak opportunities – the majority of the Subaru buckets came at the rim.
It was much the same story in the second quarter. When Subaru had to play in the halfcourt, they used crisp passes to break down the Tim Hortons defence and get clean looks at the bucket from inside the paint.
Tim Hortons did find their offensive game as they were strong on the boards and made quick passes up-court to get out on the break. Subaru led 56-27 going into the break.
Subaru kept their foot on the gas in the second half, proving why they were seeded number one. The lead continued to grow and at the final buzzer, it was a convincing 43 point victory.
Jomski Pahilanga paced Subaru, and all scorers, with 24 points. Eman New, 23, Dave Stehelin, 16, Bonbon Posecion, 13, and Joesel Rumbaoa, 12, all scored in the double-digits for Subaru.
Blaine Mason led Tim Hortons with 14 points. Ricarde Valdez added 12.
The Filipino Canadian Basketball League of Yukon will continue its playoffs this weekend as both the under and over 35 divisions will be back in action this coming weekend at the Canada Games Centre.
