Whitehorse cross-country skiers were once again front and centre at the annual Buckwheat Ski Classic.

The event, held each spring at the Log Cabin ski trails north of Skagway, featured a total of 415 registered skiers on Saturday.

Yukon skiers swept all but two of the available race titles at the 29th annual ski race.

Knute Johnsgaard and Marit Rjabov won the 50-km races – the longest distance of the day – while Marcus Deuling and his sister, Hannah Deuling, took home the 25-km crowns.

Nichollis Schmidt and Magalie Daoust of Gatineau, Que., won the 10-km races, while Mettias Schmidt, Kate Mason, Sonjaa Schmidt, and Damien Vialaret of Ottawa earned age-group victories in the five-km events.

The race is well-known for its festive atmosphere that sees many participants show up in costume.

This year’s theme was “Winter is Coming, John Snow” – a play on the popular book and TV series Game of Thrones.

Several special awards were handed out post-race.

The Des Duncan Award for volunteer appreciation went to Skagway’s Paul Reichert, who leads the aid station crew each year.

A group of Quebec skiers earned the Father Mouchet award as most inspirational skiers.

Jill Delaney’s creative three-eyed raven costume earned her the title of best-dressed, while a variety of dragon skiers earned honourable mentions.

Emerlee Jared was named Miss Buckwheat 2015. Jared is the daughter of former Miss Buckwheat winner Kaitlyn Surdyk, who was proposed to by Colten Jared following the crowning of their daughter.

John Briner won the Log Cabin Ski Society’s top prize – a set of Atomic skis.
