Yukon FC nearly hit the jackpot in Las Vegas last weekend.

The club, comprised of 10 co-ed soccer players from Whitehorse, finished second in the Co-ed B division of the Las Vegas ‘80s Holiday Classic, held Nov. 30 to Dec. 1.

Yukon FC was ousted in the finals 3-1 by the ManGinas – a "really strong” team.

"It was a really high level of play over there,” said Sylvain Laferrière one of the Yukon FC organizers. "The games weren't easy. It was hard to play against some of those teams.”

Yukon FC battled four Las Vegas clubs in the round robin, finishing second with a 1-1-2 record.

In their round-robin battle with the eventual champion ManGinas, Yukon FC lost 2-1.

The Yukon club went on to win their semifinal match 3-1 to secure a spot in the championship match.

While most of the team has returned to the territory, other players are enjoying the hot temperatures for as long as possible, including the other tournament organizer Cathy MacDonald.

As for what happened off the pitch?

"What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” Laferrière laughed.

Laferrière said the tournament was discovered through the website www.soccerresort.com, an organization that facilitates soccer tournaments across the globe.

"We decided to go to Las Vegas, more for the trip than the soccer,” Laferrière explained. "It was fun and we enjoyed it. It's a nice thing to do.”

The Whitehorse-based team was the only Canadian squad in their division. In total, 22 teams competed in four different levels of play at the holiday classic tournament.

The Yukon FC players previously played together at the International Shamrock Co-ed Soccer Tournament in Juneau, Alaska last March.

The majority of the players – all but one – play regularly in the Whitehorse Competitive Co-ed Indoor Soccer League.

Four of the male players also play in the Whitehorse Rapids Over-35 league, held Saturday mornings at the Canada Games Centre.
