Two Dustball dynasties added another notch to their championship belts yesterday as this year's annual international softball tournament wrapped up under sunny skies at the Pepsi Softball Centre.

Fans filled the bleachers and lined the fences to take in the Men's and Women's A division finals, which featured two longtime local championship teams – the P&M Recycling Guns, and the P&M Recycled Sistas.

It would be a good day for the local recycling depot, as both teams took home their respective titles.

In the Men's A final, the Guns turned the top of the seventh inning into a home run derby, unloading for 14 runs to push their lead to 32-12 and put the game out of reach for their opponent Dave's Cleaning.

The Guns hit three grand slams in the contest, and backed up their bats with impeccable defence to claim their fourth straight Dustball title. The team previously won in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The Guns will now set their sights on a bigger prize, as they plan to compete at the 2013 National Slo-Pitch Championships in Kelowna, B.C. next month.

"We wanted to use this tournament as a real big warmup, because there is no men's ball here,” said Guns' first baseman Mike Tuton after the victory. "You can only practice so much. To actually play for something is a lot different than practising.

"We're heading off to represent the Yukon, and we're pretty pumped. The way we just finished this game … we're pretty excited to take this team there. This is the strongest, deepest team we've had in a long time.”

The Guns did not dominate the tournament, losing Saturday morning to the rebuilt Creephawks.

In fact, Tuton said the team didn't really hit their stride until Sunday.

"We played good enough to win games all weekend, but until Sunday, the Guns didn't show up and play the way that we wanted to,” he said. "Our bats were pretty hot today. Three grand slams … that's a pretty efficient way to use your home runs.”

On the losing end, Dave's Cleaning shortstop Jim Semaschuk said he felt his team had a chance to finally oust the longtime Dustball champs.

"You always have a chance in softball,” he said. "We kept up with them for the most part, but that last inning just killed us.”

The Whitehorse-based team loaded up with two stars from an Edmonton-area team – after their bus broke down en route – and two talented players from Skagway, but it wasn't enough to topple the Guns.

National-level player Olivier Moreau was one of the additions, and he was impressed with the talent he saw at the annual Dustball tournament.

"I play a lot of high-level ball, and this was good ball,” he told the Star. "I was surprised by the calibre of guys up here, to be honest with you. There's some good ball players up here.”

In the Women's A final, the P&M Recycled Sistas beat the Killer Bees 15-10 to win their fifth straight Dustball title.

Previously known as Yukon Gold, the team has won the tournament from 2009 onwards.

"We are a very solid team that's been together for many years,” said Sistas' player and reigning Sourdough Rendezvous queen Kim Solonick. "We're just consistent. Consistent hitters and our fielding is excellent.”

The Sistas overcame an early deficit with a big fourth inning rally, and never trailed again.

The group did face some adversity when second baseman Laura Whitty collided with an outfielder Saturday, but she returned to play Sunday.

"It was quite a collision and we thought (Laura) had a concussion,” said Solonick. "But she pulled out of it. Most teams that would rattle, but instead it just fired us up again.”

Killer Bees shortstop Taylor Doonan fought back emotions following the final. While the Bees had edged the Sistas 9-8 in extra innings Saturday, they weren't able to come up with a subsequent victory.

"They are strong and such a consistent-hitting team,” Doonan said. "We've placed second the last how many years against them. We're getting used to it I guess. It's frustrating, it is.”

The Killer Bees consisted of six Canadian players and seven Alaskans.

Tournament director George Arcand said the event is the biggest on the Softball Yukon calendar, bar none.

More than 1,000 players take to the diamonds, providing an economic boost that is felt across the capital city.

"This is probably 35 years that it's been operating,” Arcand said. "It's always been a big tournament and it's just grown and grown. For some of these teams, it's the only chance they get to play men or women, rather than co-ed.”

Arcand said the closure of the Dempster Highway meant an Inuvik team could not compete, and there was fewer teams from Alaska than usual. In total, 62 teams competed in eight divisions.

Winners received a championship plaque and sweatshirts.
