Another much-anticipated volleyball tournament will get rolling today at Robert Service School in the Klondike.
Another much-anticipated volleyball tournament will get rolling today at Robert Service School in the Klondike.
The Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament (DIVT) is a high-energy volleyball tournament running until Saturday.
The tournament sees students in Grade 7 through to Grade 12 from communities in Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska – for the first time this year – gather for an up-tempo weekend.
The Grade 7 and 8 students will participate in a number of exhibition games, playing triple-ball-style volleyball.
Meanwhile, the Grade 9 to 12 division is a competitive tournament. Teams play a round-robin tournament on Day 1 and then advance to an elimination-style tournament concluding with championship games Saturday afternoon.
Robert Service School is very proud of its tournament and all of the volunteer work that goes into putting it together.
Its high school students spend many hours in the lead-up to the tournament organizing promotional materials, building the tournament game-play schedules, ensuring the equipment and facility are ready, setting up the school for its many visitors, and preparing the dance.
The dance takes place after Day 2 of the tournament.
The dance this year will be held at KIAC – a community art space. Students from all teams are encouraged to bring Halloween costumes with them to wear at this dance.
Another thing Dawson students are excited to share at this year’s DIVT is a concession stand.
The money made by the selling of food cooked by community volunteer members will go towards the funding of the school’s Grade 10 to 12 French class trip to France in February.
Many of the students going on this trip will be helping to cook and sell food at this year’s DIVT concession.
Last year, the F.H. Collins Warriors won the senior men’s division in Dawson, while the Porter Creek Rams took the women’s title.
Last Friday, the Vanier Crusaders took home the first major volleyball title of the season, sweeping both divisions in the Super Volley finals.
