Dawson City athletes stole the headlines at the inaugural Whitehorse Table Tennis Championships last weekend, collecting four of the seven gold medals.

In junior women’s competition, Emily Gaw beat Grace Anne Janssen 3-1 in the final. Gaw also won all of the games in the open women’s class to take that crown as well.

Ashley Harris was third in the junior girls event and Ming Huang rounded out the category in fourth.

In the open women’s class, Harris was second, Carmen Dubois and Judy Fortin tied for second and Huang was fourth.

Two pools of men battled it out to make the playoffs in the open category.

Ryan Bachli beat Daniel Li 3-0 in the first semifinal, while Kevin Murphy beath Ethan Gaw 3-1 in the other semi.

In the final, Bachli beat Murphy 3-1. Gaw beat Li 3-0 in the bronze-medal match to take third.

Ethan Gaw took the junior boys class, beating Thomas Brenner in the final 3-0. Arcel Siosan was third and Greg Murdoch was fourth.

In the adult rookie event, Irwin Gaw was first, Dubois was second, Patrick Singh was third and Fortin was fourth.

Since there weren’t many teams in attendance, event organizer Dave Stockdale opted for a modified doubles format, in which each player would play swap teams after a game.

This allowed everyone to play with everyone, said Stockdale, instead of one team dominating the competition.

On the men’s side Brenner and Bachli had the most wins for first, while Murphy and Li were next up in second.

Harris and Huang had the most wins for the women and Cornelia Brenner and Emily Gaw were both second.

The table tennis season will start up again in the new year on Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the École Whitehorse Elementary School Gym.
