Dahria Beatty is in Germany this week for the World Junior/U23 Championships of cross country skiing, and came out as the best Canadian after her race Wednesday.
Beatty, 15, is competing against mostly 18 and 19-year-old skiers at the races set in Hinterzarten, Germany.
"It has been a super experience so far and there is still two more races to go,” Beatty said, in an email to the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club.
Beatty finished 25th out of 82 girls after starting 12th in the five-kilometre classic race. She was the top Canadian finisher.
"I was very happy with my race,” Beatty said.
She was in first place when she finished up, and got the opportunity to sit in the winner's spot while she waited for the rest of the racers to finish up.
"Since I started so early when I finished I was in first place which meant I got to sit on the thrown at the finish until someone came in with a faster time,” Beatty said. "It was such a cool experience.”
She also competed in a sprint race Monday.
"In a way it was a harder race for me but a good start all the same,” Beatty said.
Beatty said the weather had improved since arriving to thick fog.
"It was a lot like a warm race day in Whitehorse but the conditions were faster,” she said.
Beatty is enjoying the chance to be around competitors from all over the world.
"Seeing all the other competitors from so many nations is slightly overwhelming yet super cool at the same time, it is hard to describe,” she said.
Monday night was the opening ceremonies for the event, that continues until the 31st.
"We all paraded through downtown Hinterzarten,” Beatty said. "The ceremonies themselves had a lot of talking but we got a chance to see all the different teams and meet the Canadian Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping team.”
Today Beatty will participate in training before her pursuit race on Friday. The U-23 racers will also have their classic technique race today.
