It was a beautiful day on Saturday down the Klondike Highway. The sun glistened off of the top of the mountains and the temperatures were nice and balmy for the Tour de Skagway organized by Sockeye Cycle and U Kon Echelon.
The cyclists met in the parking lot before Canada Customs to do their time trials on Saturday and that was followed by a road race. The races were 10 km for the youth and 20 km for the adults.
On Sunday, all the riders, minus one U11 rider, did the 20 km Skagway hill climb, which impressed coach Trena Irving.
“I was impressed with the riding,” said Irving. “All the kids stepped up to the plate.”
The cyclists tested their lungs and their legs during the “dreaded” hill climb.
“The hill climb is special,” said Irving. “It is difficult from the sheer fact that it is so vertical and not many places to rest and their is only one tiny downhill. It becomes a mental game.”
The Skagway hill climb is the third in the top 10 climbs in Canada.
