Curl for Kids hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters Yukon (BBBSY) raised $12,000 on Sunday at the Whitehorse Curling Club. The fundraiser usually attracts corporate participation but according to BBBSY executive director Angela Krueger, the demographic of the event is changing.
“Usually we could get a lot of businesses participating in the event,” said Krueger. “But this year we had a lot of people from the community sign up, it was about even between the two.
“The event is always open to everyone, so it was nice to see more community people get involved. People just love curling.”
The day started with a learn to curl session and was followed up with game play for people to try out their new curling skills.
There are 108 Big Brothers and Big Sister organizations across Canada.
The fundraiser raised $6,500 dollars in pledges and $12,000 overall, with donations and a silent auction. The money raised from the event will go to helping the volunteers offset their costs in the mentoring programs.
“The money raised is primarily for Whitehorse and Dawson City,” said Krueger. “We have over 30 matches between the community and in school mentoring. The money will be used for connectivity, so things like: Canada Games Centre passes, board games, and movie passes. It will pay for outings, so our volunteers can do some fun things with their brother or sister.”
The $12,000 raised is comparable to the amount raised last year.
