Last weekend’s Hot Hounds race lived up to its name.

A small group of mushers braved a Yukon summer heat wave to participate in Sunday’s race at Stardog Kennels on the Annie Lake Road.

With temperatures hitting the 30-degree mark in Whitehorse, a group of six competitors headed out to Mount Lorne for the second race on the summer Hot Hounds schedule.

Cynthia Corriveau won both the one-mile and two-mile bikejor races.

Her time of 4:21 was tops in the one-mile, one-dog race, ahead of Darryl Sheepway, who finished in 4:46.

Adam Robinson also broke the five-minute mark, finishing third in 4:52.

Corriveau also took the two-mile, two-dog race in 8:24, ahead of Robinson (9:29) and Sheepway (9:57).

Robinson earned victory in the one-mile, one-dog canicross event with a time of 6:24.

Megan Grabowski finished second in 8:03, while Corriveau and Sheepway tied for third in 8:38.

Corriveau said mushers soaked their dogs in a small kiddy pool before and after each race.

On the Dog Powered Sports Association of the Yukon’s Facebook page, board member Virginia Sarrazin said the board will discuss a temperature cut-off for summer races at its next meeting.

Many chose to skip the event. In comparison, last month’s season-opening race featured 20 racers.

Winners of that event were Sheepway (one-mile), Corriveau (two-mile) and Jonathan French (canicross).

The next event on the summer mushing series is scheduled for July 26 at Jean-Marc Champeval’s Can I Mush Kennel.
