The second annual Copperbelt Charity Golf Classic at the Meadow Lakes Golf Course last Friday raised $15,000 to benefit the Yukon T1D Support Network for Yukoners living with Type 1 diabetes.

The event, co-founded by Scott Kent, the Yukon Party MLA for Copperbelt, and his spouse, Amanda Leslie, brought together 52 golfers along with special guest John Chick.

Chick is a former CFL defensive end who played eight seasons in the league, primarily with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He also played in the NFL.

At 14, Chick was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He played his entire career with an insulin pump and was introduced to a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) while a Roughrider.

He played 18 holes on Friday after delivering inspiring remarks supporting all Yukoners living with Type 1 diabetes, while providing first-hand experience with how the disease impacts families.

On June 6, Chick visited Vanier Catholic Secondary School to speak with the students, and in the evening, attended the Royal Canadian Legion.

The event's silent auction raised over $3,800 and the live auction, whose crown jewel was a signed Dylan Cozens Lethbridge jersey, raised over $4,600.

“Amanda and I are once again overwhelmed by the generosity of our community and how we come together to support Yukoners,” said Kent. “We’re so happy with the fundraising results this year, which surpassed our inaugural event in 2018, that we’re booked to host our third annual charity golf tournament next June.”

“The Yukon T1D Support Network is so grateful to Scott and Amanda for their support of Yukoners living with Type 1 diabetes and the efforts of our volunteer non-profit organization within the community,” network vice-president Jill Nash said in a release.

“We are so thankful to all the sponsors, individuals and small businesses who donated their resources, time and talents to this event and of course, we so appreciate all the golfers and auction bidders. This event is a success because our community shows up and we support one another.”

The next Copperbelt Charity Golf Classic will be held at Meadow Lakes on June 5, 2020.
