Whitehorse’s Complete Concrete failed to defend their Dustball Co-Ed Division A title Sunday.
Whitehorse’s Complete Concrete failed to defend their Dustball Co-Ed Division A title Sunday.
The team, which won its Division I co-ed opening tournament in May, just couldn’t find the momentum it needed against Juneau’s McGivney’s Bar & Grill.
“It happens. Sometimes you can come to a game and everyone is hitting and everyone is fielding and everyone is doing everything and sometimes it just doesn’t happen,” said Brett Green, Complete Concrete team captain.
The Whitehorse team had a good weekend, but lost to McGivney’s earlier in the tournament.
“We knew what we were getting into when we were meeting them again and we were just flat this morning is all,” he said after the game.
Dominic Branson, of McGivney’s, was pleased with his team’s win over what he called, “the best team here.”
“It’s good competition and good fun,” he said.
McGivney’s played a solid game throughout and ended play on a tight double out, at second and first to finish the final 15-6.
Branson credits his team’s strong showing to the women on his team, who also suited up to play a double header with their women’s team, Killer Bees, on the same diamond right away.
“Our ladies are really what makes the difference on this team. They’re really good players,” he said. “You have to have good women. They carried us.”
The Killer Bees would drop their women’s game to the Yukon Titans.
With a low scoring game, Green said it just wasn’t his team’s game at bat.
“I think for the most part our defence was there, we just couldn’t get a rally going on the sticks at all today. It happens I guess,” he said after the game.
Play for Complete Concrete continues this week as playoffs begin for Whitehorse’s co-ed teams.
Seventy-one teams competed in this year’s Dustball. There were 39 co-ed teams, 14 women’s teams and 18 men’s teams.
Three teams from Inuvik and three teams from Carmacks attended, along with a smattering of teams from Alaska.
The Vic City Mercenaries, of Victoria, also played in their first Dustball ever, finishing second in the co-ed B division.
Whitehorse Dental Donkeys rounded out the co-ed A division in third place.
Thibodeau’s Valley Liqueur was first in the B division with Vic City Mercenaries in second and Wounded Deere in third.
In the co-ed C division, Inuvik’s Aklak Air Falcons took the win with Carmacks Nighthawks in second and Philmar RV in third.
The co-ed D division was won by the Predators. KDFN was second and HUB was third.
The P&M Recycling Guns defended their Dustball men’s A division title Sunday against the Alaska Fudge Co.
Its their eighth win in the past 11 years.
The Guns got on the board early and a skeleton crew Alaska Fudge Co. didn’t have the power to match.
“They’re a hellacious team,” said Mark Sebens, Alaska Fudge Co. team captain. “They just hit the ball really well.”
It was a special game for Sebens, who said this is about his 20th year at Dustball. His son Fletcher, who was born at the Whitehorse General Hospital, played alongside him.
Despite the loss, Sebens was all smiles after the game.
“It’s kinda fun to be here playing against these guys,” he said. “They shut us down from hitting and it matters who puts up the most points on the scoreboard, simple as that.”
Whitehorse’s Dave’s Cleaning Crew rounded out third in the men’s A division. The Brewers won the B division, followed by Juneau’s Thibodeau’s Kenny’s Liquor and the Urban Realty Reds.
In the men’s C division, Big Bear Donair took the win. Carmacks’ CRB Pop-Ups was second and Tetra Tech was third.
See Tuesday’s newspaper for coverage of the women’s A division final.
