Much like the weather, play has been heating up lately in the Mountain View Men's Commercial Golf League.
Much like the weather, play has been heating up lately in the Mountain View Men's Commercial Golf League.
On Thursday, golfers were back on the greens, using an individual mach play format.
When all was said and done, Macdonald & Co. and Pour Rite Construction emerged as the two big winners, taking the full eight points.
The stellar showing for Pour Rite Construction moved it up two places in the standings from last to 14th.
However, points and placement in the standings aren't a central focus for Larry Cripps, a long-time golfer in the league and member of Pour Rite Construction
"We come out to have fun and enjoy the game," he said. "If we get points, we do, and if don't we are not overly concerned about it.
"It's more of the camaraderie. That makes it all worthwhile. The points is maybe a bonus."
Cripps, who spoke before teeing off, said he drank lots of water and was confident that would make a difference with combatting the heat. He added the drink girl is around too if he needs any refreshments.
Players in the Mountain View Golf League play nine holes every Thursday, with starting times between 4:40 p.m. and 6:28 p.m.
The different formats used include skins, team match play, stroke play, team scramble, etc.
Each team is sponsored by local commercial businesses.
The two different divisions in the men's league include the Palmer and Nicklaus.
This year there is a total of 32 teams (16 in each division)
Leading the way in the Palmer is MacKay LLP, which scored six points this week.
The team has a total of 62 points, leading Northerm Knights by just three. EMCO Ace Holes sit in third with 56 points.
Despite only scoring two points on Thursday, Missing Links retained sole possession of first in the Nicklaus division. The group has accumulated 66 points, four ahead of Super A, which posted an impressive seven points this week.
Terry Weninger, a sub for Missing Links, said the team has done well so far this season.
"We have had a fairly good year, putting together some good holes and things of this nature," he said. "I try and contribute as I can, (but) the regular team members are the ones that have really pulled us through."
The heat wasn't a drawback for Weninger, who brought a bottle of water with him and mused over using an umbrella.
"If you can play in the cold, you should be able to play in the heat," he said.
Similar to Cripps, Weninger said the social portion is what makes the league so enjoyable.
"It's good companionship," he said. "It's good conversation and no matter who you play it's a very friendly men's league."
