'Coin flip' to determine 2009 broomball champion, says president
Expectations are high for members on more than a few broomball teams heading into this year's playoff round.
Expectations are high for members on more than a few broomball teams heading into this year's playoff round.
With three squads tied with 13 wins and the fourth right in the mix with 11 there is no clear-cut favourite to win the 2009 championship.
"It's going to be a real battle in the top four spots," said Milford Allan, president of the Yukon Broomball Association. "It should be a coin flip."
The playoff action kicks off on Sunday with a tilt between Capital Towing and Whitehorse Flippers Pub Sunday at 1 p.m.
Each team will play right up until the end of the playoffs, which conclude next Saturday.
All of the games will be held at the Whitehorse Broomball Rink, off Range Road.
Roadhouse placed first (13-4-3), while the Yukon News was right behind them occupying second at 13-6-1. This was a big improve for the News, which last year finished with a record of 6-8-3.
Coyne came in third with 13 wins and seven losses, while Capital Towing placed fourth at 11-6-3.
In its first season, rookie team Whitehorse Flippers Pub placed fifth with three wins.
This was a pleasant surprise for Allan, who is a member on the team.
He said he was just hoping for one win, but the team really improved as the season progressed.
"All the rookies are really excited and they have the confidence because they beat or they tied some of the top teams," he said. "I think that's what we are working off of."
Allan said he hopes the team finishes third in the playoffs, adding they could be the "dark horse" of this year's competition.
Builders Supplyand is the remaining team in the broomball league and finished with one win.
Diane Stewart, a player on Roadhouse, said despite finishing first in the standings it's hard to say how she thinks her team will do in the playoffs.
"We lost a few people to the spring break vacations, so we have a very short bench," she said. "We lost a couple of our key people, so I think we will do OK; it's just a matter of we won't have a lot of spares."
Stewart said any of the top four teams have a good chance of winning the championship.
The finals for the 2009 tournament will conclude on March 14.
Coyne won the championship in 2008.
The top male scorer in the broomball league this season was Coyne's Justin Saunders, who finished with 22 goals and 27 assists for a total of 49 points.
He played a total of 18 games. Saunders' total was two points higher than second place finisher Josh Hirsch.
Jean Poulin was the leading female scorer, netting six goals and contributing 12 assists in just eight games.
Ryan Hannah was the top goalie in the league.
The Roadhouse netminder finished with 12 wins, three losses and three ties, posting a 1.35 goals against average. He recorded three shutouts.
