The final score was a little closer than expected, but Tuesday's end result saw a familiar outcome for the Co-operaiders. Another win in the Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League.
The final score was a little closer than expected, but Tuesday's end result saw a familiar outcome for the Co-operaiders. Another win in the Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League.
The squad improved its Division Three record to a perfect 4-0, surviving a late scare in its game against TEC Drywall.
What looked like an easy victory for the Co-operaiders turned into a close affair, nearing the end of the contest.
Two innings was all it took for TEC Drywall to battle back. The persistent group managed to close an 11-2 gap (after the first three innings of play), scoring an impressive 13 runs in the following two innings.
Fortunately for the Co-operaiders, however, time ran out and they were able to hang on, winning by a close score of 17-15.
"This kind of stuff happens all the time," said Co-operaiders captain Aaron Mones about team's coming back in the Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League. "We kind of took advantage of any hit we could get and they came right back at the end. It was anybody's game really."
TEC Drywall was first to get on the board, scoring a pair of runs in the opening half of the first inning. The team's first run was thanks to Lisa Abel, who with two on base, connected for a clutch single into left field.
With two outs, Co-operaiders pitcher Ron Davis made a nice fielding play, snagging down a ground ball and then firing it to first base to end the inning.
The Co-operaiders stormed back in the bottom of the first. The team got the ball rolling with a triple that drove in its first run and then went on to score five more, before Davis popped out to TEC pitcher Cody ‘Pops' Nadeau.
From there, the Co-operators took control of the game on both the offensive and defensive end.
The team followed up its six-run, first inning showing, by scoring three more in the second and two more in the third. Not only did the team nearly double its run total, it also was successful in shutting down TEC Drywall's offence.
TEC was held off the scoreboard until its fourth inning comeback.
The team just fell short of catching the Co-operators, despite Abel batting in two more runs in the fifth and an over-the-fence home run courtesy of Rob Sinclair.
TEC player Guylaine Page-Hammond said despite not winning, the late comeback was a positive sign for her team.
"I think it was a great game," she said. "We still lost, but we came back pretty good.
That's the way it is."
Mones said there is a good rivalry developing between the two teams, which included both squads getting a win over each other in this past weekend's Opening Tournament.
"It's a really good match-up between these two teams," he said. "They are a pretty good team too, so we have fun playing them every time."
He said one of the players he was really impressed with in Tuesday's game was Joanne Noseworthy, who competed after injuring her leg in the Opening Tournament.
"She went in anyway because we didn't have any subs, so we needed her."
Mones said Noseworthy had some amazing hits and was impressed with her being able to get on base despite not being able to run.
"She did really well," he said. "We just said get to first and we will cover the rest."
The Co-operaiders and Catalyst "Fireballs" are the only two teams unbeaten teams in Division Three. Both squads have a record of 4-0.
Division Three action in the Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League resumes on Thursday evening.
