A composed Yukon side kept its cool, then scored their way to a championship in Victoria last weekend.
The team, sponsored by Hvactech Systems and Yukon Brewing, came back to beat the Surrey Hornets 3-2 in a wild and chippy final at the Pacific Cup, held Jan. 15 to 17.
The teams were competing in the Vic Pub Co division – one of two women’s categories at the event.
Down 2-0 early, Yukon battled back with three goals in less than five minutes.
Captain Sue Hamilton buried a backhander, Ashtyn Sandulak converted a feed from Tshayla Nothstein, and Pam Harris put home the game-winner as the team emptied the tank en route to the championship.
Despite a rough-and-tumble contest, the Yukoners kept their cool, said defenceman Jessica Pumphrey.
“It got increasingly chippy as the game went on, and there was a lot of chatter between the two teams,” she told the Star. “We managed to get ourselves settled down and played through some bad calls and no-calls.”
Following the game, onlookers thanked Team Yukon for what they called the game of the tournament, and also apologized for their opponents’ behaviour, Pumphrey added.
The team went to the finals on the strength of an 8-0 win over the Surrey Canadians, a 5-1 win over the Nanaimo Black Ice and a 1-1 tie versus the Fuller Lake Shooters.
Yukon went through to the final over Fuller Lake on goal differential.
The Yukon squad made quite an impression at the tournament, Pumphrey said.
For instance, event organizers were stunned when the squad requested the heat to be turned off in their dressing room.
“The arenas in Victoria had heat being pumped into them, to the point we had to actually ask for it to be turned off, as some of our players were overheating,” Pumphrey said.
“The arena staff thought this was a joke until we explained that we were actually from the Yukon, and plus-10 didn’t necessitate the amount of heat being used.”
Yukon Brewing also supplied beverages, which the team delivered to their opponents’ dressing rooms post-game – usually to cheers loud enough to be heard down the hallway.
