Runners across Canada – and the world – will once again take up Terry Fox’s dream of a world without cancer on Sunday.

The Terry Fox Run for cancer research enters its 35th year and the Whitehorse run will include a celebratory cake to mark the occasion, said organizer George Maratos.

The local event will take place at Rotary Peace Park at 1 p.m. Sunday. Registration begins at noon.

Participants are invited to run, walk, bike, roller blade, or longboard their way along the Millennium Trail route, said Maratos.

There is no registration fee for the race. Instead, a donation to the foundation is encouraged.

Whitehorse band Ukes of Hazard will add their flair to the festivities, and the post-race celebrations will include complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, as well as a barbecue and cake, donated by Wyke’s Your Independent Grocer.

“Who doesn’t like to have cake when they finish a run?” Maratos cracked. “It plays to the whole theme around the day – it’s not necessarily a run. It’s more a gathering to raise awareness and celebrate Terry.”

Terry Fox is a Canadian hero who began his Marathon of Hope at the age of 21.

Beginning in Newfoundland, Fox ran the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 straight days – on one leg.

He succumbed to cancer before his cross-country tour could be completed, however.

Since then, supporters across the globe have continued Fox’s dream of a cure for cancer – contributing more than $650 million to the cause in his name.

Maratos said donations will be collected on site during registration, but supporters can also chip in funds online at www.terryfox.org/.

Tax receipts are available.

Maratos hopes the city can finally crack the $10,000 plateau for donations at the 35th anniversary run, a mark the Yukon capital has flirted with once before during his eight-year tenure as organizer.
