It was a tale of two hockey games on the final day of this year's Whitehorse Summer Hockey League.
The championship game featured a 3-2 goalies' duel that needed overtime to decide, while the battle for third was a scoring gallery, concluding 13-8.
Ted Stephens ended more than 25 minutes of shutout hockey, netting the game winner for Cinderwood with just 27 seconds remaining in OT.
Monday's win over Casa Loma was a little bit of payback for Stephen's, who was on the losing team in last year's Whitehorse Summer Hockey League.
"It's always good to get the win," Stephens, who plays on the Moncton Wildcats in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, said. "We lost last year against the same team, so it's definitely nice to get them back this year. To beat them this year feels great."
The other game for third place was played between Ketza and EBA.
Ketza trailed only once and didn't look back after taking the lead. The team scored three quick goals and then added two more before the conclusion of the first period.
Ketza had even more success in the second, putting in seven more in its five goal victory. The team benefitted from three separate hat tricks, which came from David Stephens, Jared Kraft and Joe Densmore.
The remaining scorers on Ketza included Aren Coats, Burt Stephens and Neil Chambers, who finished with two goals.
Spencer Thomlin led all EBA scorers, notching a hat trick, while Rob Wells and Joe Martin each put in two goals. Rob Stuckey netted the remaining goal for EBA.
One game later, Cinderwood got off to a jumping start, forcing Casa Loma goalie Evan Grant to make a tough glove save less than one minute into the contest.
Clayton Thomas rewarded his goalies' efforts just 10 seconds later, scoring for Casa Loma on a one-timer that was set up by Ryan Hodgins. The goal was greeted with cheers on Casa Loma's bench, whose players pounded the boards with enthusiasm.
Goalie Steven Harlow didn't have much of a chance on the shot, which was made in close range and landed in the top portion of the net.
Cinderwood later responded with a goal of their own, scored half way through the first frame. The shot was made by Dave Pearson, who fired it past Grant's glove hand.
The celebration, however, was shortlived and ended with another Casa Loma goal. Scott Horsey scored the goal.
Cinderwood once again showed some resilience, tying it up with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first period. Jay Glass was the team's second goal scorer.
A scary moment happened in the second period after a shot, less than five minutes in, struck Grant in the neck. Thankfully, he didn't need medical attention and after getting up remained in the game.
With nothing decided after 44 minutes, the contest went into a five minute overtime session.
What looked like it was destined for a shootout was changed by Stephens, who scored on a final rush, making a quick snap shot that bounced off Grant, landing in the back of the net.
"I was kind of tired," Stephens said about the play. "It was at the end of my shift, so I just tried to get to the middle and get a shot. The goalie didn't really see it."
Jared Tuton, a player on Casa Loma, said it was tough losing that way.
"It was ours to defend and they came out and played a great game," he said. "I thought both ways was a good game and they came to win tonight."
Tuton had nothing but good things to say about his goalie and wasn't surprised with his decision to continue after being struck in the neck.
"He's a gamer," Tuton said. "It hurt him a lot, but I asked him if he was going to finish the game and he was pretty mad at me for even questioning it."
Lawrence Brennan, a player for Cinderwood, said he was hoping to avoid a shootout.
"They probably had overall more shooters than we do," he said about the members on Casa Loma. "Top notch shooters."
