The most anticipated soccer tournament of the year ended in thrilling fashion Sunday night.
The Multiple Scoregasms edged defending champion Team Lars 4-3 in overtime Sunday, capping the annual three-day Christmas soccer tournament in style.
Scoregasms player Robin Smith buried the winner late in the second five-minute overtime period, sniping one over the left shoulder of Team Lars’ goalie Stu Paton. Smith’s goal earned his team an $800 cash prize.
Kurtis Hills, Dillon Vickerman and Rob Borud scored for the Scoregasms in regular time.
Team Lars’ sniper Nick Locke had a pair of goals in the loss, while Patrik Zuccarini added a single.
An estimated crowd of 200 took in the contest at Vanier Catholic Secondary School, which followed the women’s final won by Charly’s Angels 6-4.
“This is huge,” said Hills of the hard-fought championship. “It’s my first time winning and it feels great.”
Other members of the Scoregasms were Caleb Kelly, Dominic Korn, Jesse Latoski, Travis Olynyk, Jono Runions and Robin Stacey.
The game had its rough moments with players from both teams receiving repeated warnings from the referee.
Ultimately, Team Lars was outhustled by the speedier Scoregasms.
“They were a little bit younger and really skilled,” said Locke. “We were really experienced but you always need a little luck to win.”
While they failed to make the final, two Missle Toes players picked up major awards, with Sam Lindsey being named top forward with eight goals and Boris Hoefs snagging MVP honours. Michael Hare of the ’91 Grizzlies was named top
male goalie.
Meanwhile, the women’s championship was a rematch of last year’s final between Charly’s Angels and the Golden Oldies.
Angels’ star Camille Galloway scored a hat trick, Megan Lanigan sniped a pair and Jaylene Kelly also struck to lead the defending champions to a 6-4 win.
Emily Fedoriak, Susan Whitty, Laura Whitty and Sam Wintemute responded for the Oldies.
With the Angels – named after coach Charly Kelly – leading 5-4 late, the Oldies surged in an attempt to tie it, but couldn’t beat goalie Anna Janowicz. Galloway’s bullet from the right side past Oldies goalie Emily Hoefs sealed the game.
“This is the highlight of our Christmas,” Lanigan told the Star. “A lot of us come back for the holidays and it’s always a good time out there.
“As a group, we’re super competitive and it can get pretty intense.”
Other members of the championship team included Lara Herry-Saint Onge, Jamie Joe-Hudson, Rachel Kinvig, Aimee Parker and Cheyenne Ryan.
Galloway was named the tournament’s top forward with 10 goals, while Parker was named MVP.
Alongside the tournament victory, the Angels pocketed $425.
Emily Hoefs was named goalie of the tournament.
“The Hoefs family lives for this tournament,” she smiled post-game.
“This tournament’s unique in that you know everybody and there’s a lot of old grudges. We usually lose in the final because we’re old and tired.”
The annual tournament hosted by the local Senior Metro League is a highlight for players.
“We look forward to it every year,” said co-organizer Haley Stallabrass. “We don’t play competitively all year, and this event is definitely fun and competitive.”
Last year, her father, Ian Stallabrass, built sideboards for the tournament, separating the fans from the gameplay. The boards, which now feature doors, were built with material donated by Home Hardware.
