The stars came out to shine at the Yukon Selects annual Christmas Showcase last night.
A large crowd was treated to plenty of highlight-reel goals and saves as the best soccer players in the territory gathered for the holiday all-star match at the Canada Games Centre.
The annual game began with a female Selects team tying the U-20 Academy girls 3-3.
Former Team Canada player Amy Vermeulen netted the equalizer for the Selects in the dying moments – her second goal of the game.
Sue Whitty had the other goal for the Selects, while Thea Carey, Sam Wintemute and Malorie Hanson scored for the U-20 girls.
University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat player Camille Galloway, 18, said the event is a highlight for players who grew up playing in the Yukon system.
“This is always my favourite game of the year,” she said. “You get to play with everyone you weren’t able to play with during the year. And it’s probably the biggest audience I’ll ever get to play in front of.”
Following an intermission contest that featured junior and Timbit soccer players, the men took to the field.
After U-20 boys ’keeper Timber Schroff strung off a number of highlight reel saves, the older Selects finally broke through with goals by Caleb Kelly, Harrison Kwok, Domagoj Pehar and Stephen Dynes (2) for a 5-0 win.
Selects keeper Nick Gillen, who spent the year training with the St. F.X. X-Men, earned the clean sheet.
Dynes, 23, said it is always a pleasure playing with former teammates.
“It’s nice to get all the best players back together and see all of the up-and-coming stars,” Dynes said post-game. “We all grow up playing with each other and it’s a lot of fun to reunite.”
The older generation still has it, Dynes added.
“They’re a lot younger with more lungs,” he said of the U-20 team. “We were just able to string together some nice passes and finish our opportunities.”
