Chilkoot Brewers, High Calibre Contracting win their divisions in opening softball tournament
The Chilkoot Brewers provided its own Cinderella story over the weekend by capturing the opening tournament for Division 2 with a 17-11 victory over Dave's Cleaning.
The Chilkoot Brewers provided its own Cinderella story over the weekend by capturing the opening tournament for Division 2 with a 17-11 victory over Dave's Cleaning.
The Brewers were in seventh place in league standings heading into the tournament, having won just one of their first four games.
Right off the bat, the Brewers began their march to victory when they took down Coke 14-11 Friday night.
Though Coke shares first place in league standings with three wins and one loss, it made an early exit when it dropped its second game Saturday morning.
Chilkoot, on the other hand, continued the preliminary round, defeating Dave's Cleaning 11-8, and moved onto the final when they defeated the Terrorizers by default after the club slipped up in the batting order, and was called on it.
Dave's Cleaning, which is sitting in the middle of the pack in Division 2 with a 2-2 record, never looked back after it lost its opener to the Brewers. Dave's went on to defeat the Nuway Crushers 12-8, and then ousted the Terrorizers in a nail-biting 17-16 win to move onto the final against the Brewers.
Scott Horsey's three-run homer in the fourth inning for Chilkoot opened up a gap in the score which proved too much for Dave's to overcome, particularly given a solid defensive display by the Brewers.
In the opening tournament for Division 4, a polished mix of veteran cunningness and youthful exuberance in Saturday's final provided the edge for High Calibre Contracting in its 19-7 victory over arch-rival Coyote Video.
It was something of a clash of the Titans, with both Coyote and High Calibre leading their league standings with three wins and one loss.
While High Calibre dominated their run through the first three games of the preliminary round, scoring 65 runs but giving up just 17, it was a different storey for Coyote.
Coyote won its first two, but was pushed down to the loser's side when it lost 22-5 to High Calibre.
It barely stayed alive to set up a rematch against High Calibre in the final when it defeated the Bounty Hunters 16-15, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Relatively close through the first half of the championship, High Calibre was leading 7-2 when Coyote's Mike Francis hit a three-run homer to pull within two in the top of the fourth.
But in the bottom of the fourth, wily veteran Myrna Engren burned the Coyote outfield with a three-run double over everybody's head, and then repeated the effort with another two-run double in the sixth.
With High Calibre's roster of almost all teenagers – Engren and another mom being the exceptions – the youthful speed and stamina proved too much for Coyote in the end.
The opening tournament for Divisions 1, 3, and 5 will be held this weekend.
