The Grizzlies star dropped a season-high 49 points in the Yukon Men’s Basketball Winter League final Saturday night in an eventual 85-80 win over the Raptors.
Chetcuti’s stellar performance came in what was a very physical, up-and-down game at Vanier Catholic Secondary School.
David Stehelin poured in 30 points for the Raptors, who finished tied with the Grizzlies at 7-3 after the 10-game winter season.
Ryan Hindson added 19 in the loss, but the Raptors had no answer for Chetcuti, who was in beast mode.
Members of the Grizzlies, according to the league website, include: Chetcuti, Ben Yu Schott, Graham Cochrane, Mark Hureau, Taylor Tiefenbach, Darcy McLean, Darcy Hill, Nate Dorion, Sean Munro, Marty Kitchen and Neil Talsma.
The Grizzlies downed the fourth-place Nuggets in the semis, while the Raptors dispatched the Bulls.
The Bulls went on to beat the Nuggets 76-71 Sunday to take third place on the strength of Chris Carino’s game-high 36 points.
Aaron Hutchison added 24 in the fast-paced win.
Led by Sean Schmidt’s 22 points, the Nuggets’ balanced scoring saw all five starters finish in double figures.
The SuperSonics and Hawks finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
The winter league followed the fall league, which ended with the Bears beating the Huskies 75-58.
Prior to this season, a men’s basketball league hadn’t been organized here in 10 years.

The Raptors had a core of high school players with the 2nd leading scorer (Ryan Hindson only 15 yrs old). Given the well seasoned opposition it was a valiant effort put forth by the Raptors.

.... A huge defensive presence was provided by Graham Cochrane, whom blocked at least 8 shots during the game. Taylor Tiefenbach picked up the few rebounds Will Chetcuti put up. The rotation of Hureau, Munro and Kitchen proved well, as the Grizzlies were without 3 of their big men.

The Grizzlies only has 6 starters on Championship night: Kitchen, Cochrane, Munro, Hureau, McLean & Chetcuti. Neil Talsma felt the boxing match was of greater importance than the Championship game and was traded before tip-off for 6 Gatorades which the players enjoyed. The team was quite pleased with the trade......
