Sasha Merrell scored twice and goaltender Stacey Bowden frustrated opposing shooters for the third consecutive game as the Cat Women defeated the Black Widows 4-1 to claim the fifth annual Jamboree tournament title Saturday afternoon at Takhini Arena.

Talyce Henkel and Jocelyn Barrett also scored for the Cat Women to claim one of the Yukon's most unique trophies – made up of a skate, a stick, two foil-wrapped pucks, and a bra.

Stacie Zaychuk of the Black Widows was the only player to beat Bowden in the championship final.

"It's a lot of fun,” Bowden said of the two-day, four-team tournament hosted by the Whitehorse Women's Hockey Association.

"We get to play with girls that we wouldn't normally get to play with. I'm fortunate enough as a goalie to be able to play with some of these girls in league play, but it's fun to see them playing on different teams together. Everybody was equal and it was just a lot of fun.”

While exhausted, Bowden managed to stifle shooters for three games in a row, after she filled in for her netminding friend Vera Lafond, who was injured in a game with the Wonder Women early Saturday afternoon.

"I couldn't not let them have a goalie,” Bowden said. "She's picked me up many, many times before to help me out.”

Bowden went on to lead the Wonder Women to a third-place finish over the Atomic Betties prior to her own team's championship game.

"My feet hurt so bad right now, because I haven't taken my skates off since 7:45 this morning,” she laughed following her team's 4-1 tournament win, which ended after 6 p.m.

League president Joelle Hodgins said the annual tournament was a big hit amongst local hockey players.

"We heard from quite a few people that they had an absolute blast, and it was one of the best tournaments they've ever been to,” Hodgins said.

A number of awards were handed out following the tournament at a banquet at Epic Pizza. The tournament's youngest player was 13-year-old Maya Oakley and the oldest player was Bonnie Duffee, who wouldn't disclose her age, but was determined to be older than 62.

Team Most Valuable Players, as calculated by point totals were: Cat Women's Merrell (6G, 3A), Black Widows' Cheryl and Chantelle Rivest (5G, 4A), Wonder Women's Coralie Ullyett (3G), and Atomic Betties' Laura Grieve (2G, 2A).

Most Sportsmanlike Players were Bowden (Cat Women), Maralyn Rogers (Black Widows), Liz Eddy (Wonder Women) and Oakley (Atomic Betties). This award was the most coveted as players took home a hockey stick necklace charm from Goldsmiths Design Studio.

Most Outrageous Players were Kirsti Muller (Cat Women), Christine Blodgett (Black Widows), Guin Lalena (Wonder Women) and Vanessa Bogaert (Atomic Betties).

The event is a supplemental tournament to regular league play, said Hodgins. This weekend, the league will assemble an all-star squad to square off with the Female Mustangs during Hockey Day in Whitehorse.

The seven-team league has seen a new development recently, with North Star Mini Storage signing on as the first team sponsor. The league is now looking to land six more sponsors, and intends to have company logos displayed on team jerseys.

"We are pretty excited about it,” Hodgins said. "We are hoping this can help keep registration fees down while the ice fees keep getting more and more expensive.”
